2020 NBA Rookie of The Year Futures: Morant or Williamson?

Finally, the Pelicans are ready to start featuring Zion Williamson in their games! And so the big question is: Can Zion surpass Ja Morant, or will the latter continue to carry the favorite label to earn the Rookie of the Year honors this current season?

Right now, Morant has proven himself worthy, and he still has one more factor in his favor: no rookie has taken this award with less than fifty games played during a given season, and Zion will have the chance to play as many as 38 contests.

Also, New Orleans’ vice president David Griffin mentioned that Zion will not be playing all the remaining games for the team.

The Case for Morant

Thanks to Morant, the Grizzlies are now part of the postseason picture at the Western Conference. This is impressive when considering that this team is struggling against the fifteenth-most difficult in the league.

Let’s add to that the fact that Morant missed four games back in December due to a back injury!

Memphis have won fourteen out of their last fourteen contests with Morant. Without him, the Grizzlies have won just one out of six games, losing those by an average of twelve points.

He is an accomplished difference-maker. As of now, Morant is leading all rookies in assists and scoring, both per-36 and per-game.

And, only three more players in the league score and share more than the Grizzlies new star per-36 stat: LeBron James, Trae Young, and Luka Doncic.

Also, even though Morant shines with his stats, it’s his fantasy hoops that fans, in general, are surely loving and appreciating.

Indeed, it would take an impressive half-season for ages from Zion Williamson to surpass Morant.

The Case for Zion

But if there’s someone that can rise to that challenge is Zion. There have never been any players quite like him. He’s 6’6 and weighs 284 pounds, and possesses a finesse-power combination that is rare in someone of his size.

And, he has earned an excellent reputation as one of the most devastating finishers in basketball. The spacing issues created in a starting lineup that features Zion and Lonzo Ball can indeed turn problematic. But his ability to break down defenses makes rivals respect him regardless of where he is positioned in the court.

Let’s also consider the case of Brandon Ingram, who might fight for becoming the best in the team, cannibalizing each other’s numbers at the same time. And this can be a factor that can play against Williamson when it comes to catching up with Morant.

And then, he will also have veterans such as JJ Redick, JRue Holiday, and Derrick Favors, all of whom can support him to help him obtain success often and early.

All in all, chances are that Morant will get the Rookie of the Year honors this season, but the next one, it will be an all-rookies-versus-Zion contest!
