The team was originally established as the New Orleans Hornets during the 2002, 03 seasons, when the franchise relocated to NOLA from Charlotte.
When hurricane Katrina hit NOLA, the team temporarily relocated to Oklahoma City and spent two years there.
Later on, during the 2007-08 season, the franchise returned to New Orleans, still playing as the Hornets.
Then, in 2013, the team was renamed the Pelicans.
And, the name, history, and records of the Charlotte Hornets from 1988 to 2002, were returned to Charlotte to be utilized by the then Charlotte Bobcats, a team that went back to being the Hornets after the 2014 season.
