Seattle Seahawks Betting Odds

You are here

Beating the Cowboys on December 24, 2017 for their ninth win of the season, Pete Carroll and his Seahawks locked up their sixth straight winning season. Despite the 9-7 record, the Seahawks were on the outside of the playoffs looking in. This snapped a streak of five straight years in which the Seahawks won a playoff game - not just made the postseason, mind you, but won a game. This level of excellence is unmatched in the NFC and has made the Seahawks one of the more successful teams of the past decade. After a disappointing season, however, Seattle let much of their core walk, signaling that a regression may be in order for the franchise. They still have Pete Carroll calling plays and Russell Wilson under center, but with so many unfamiliar faces on defense, no one quite knows what to expect from the team this year. As a result, the Seattle Seahawks betting odds are the lowest they have been in Carroll’s tenure.

Holes to Fill

The Seahawks pass defense, and specifically their secondary, dubbed the “Legion of Boom,” have been their mainstay of success for years. With several key pieces leaving after 2017, this year’s Hawks defense will feature many new faces and unproven, raw talent. After spending seven seasons as the Seahawks’ top corner and appearing in four Pro Bowls, the outspoken Richard Sherman has left for division rival San Francisco. Also missing from the Hawks secondary in 2018 will be the vicious, play disrupting strong safety Kam Chancellor who is unlikely to be available this year due to a severe neck injury. Staples of the secondary for all of the Seahawks’ recent success, this duo’s presence will be missed, especially as Seattle is now also playing with a depleted defensive line.

Compiling 8.5 sacks in 2017, defensive end Michael Bennett was dealt to the world champion Eagles for a fifth-round pick and an unproven receiver. The Seahawks did not get much in return for the three-time Pro Bowler. The Seahawks have also parted ways with defensive end Cliff Avril. At one time considered to be the best member of the Seahawks’ front four, Avril provided nothing to the 2017 team and was released after the season. The Seahawks are now in search of a new identity, reeling from these four major losses.
