The Spurs are a professional basketball team based out of San Antonio, Texas. They are part of the Western Conference Southwest Division, and they play their games at the AT&T Center.

San Antonio Spurs Brief History

The Spurs are just one of the few teams to have remained intact after the merger of the ABA and the NBA, and they are also the only former ABA squad to have won an NBA title.

This team started as the Dallas Chaparrals, and they are one of the 11 original ABA teams.

The Chaparrals didn’t do good during their early years and suffered from a lack of interest by Dallas fans.

Then, they switched “Dallas” for “Texas,” playing its matches in Fort Worth, with the goal of making the team fully regional, but this proved unsuccessful.

The team then returned to Dallas for a short while, and, even though they were acquiring some on-court success, they were experiencing some financial difficulties at the same time.

After these disappointments, the owners of the franchise wanted out, but they worked out a deal with a team of investors from San Antonio.

These investors, led by manager Angelo Drossos, leased the team for three years for San Antonio, with the promise of returning the franchise to Dallas later on, if a purchase wasn’t concreted by 1975.

After this deal took place, the team was re-baptized as the San Antonio Gunslingers, but that name was quickly switched to the Spurs before they could even play a single game.

The original uniform colors of the Chaparrals were red, white, and blue, and those colors were immediately changed to the now familiar black, silver and white.

The following year, the ABA-NBA merger happened, and that allowed the Spurs to remain in San Antonio permanently.
