Betting on the Nationals

Washington is one of the hottest teams in baseball right now, winning their past six games and 10 of their last 12 games.

Currently, they own a 10.5 game lead over the Braves of Atlanta in the NL East.

Bryce Harper leads the way for Washington, having another MVP worthy season.

Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg have also added their own on the mound and are strong candidates for the CY Young award at the end of the season.

Washington’s starters have 61 quality starts over this season and leads the league. They own a combined 4.07 ERA which is 9th best in baseball, but would be much lower if the bullpen wasn’t averaging five runs per game.

The Nationals are one of the best teams in baseball on offense, having a 279 batting average (2nd in the league), and have scored 521 runs (also 2nd best).

Since the All-Star break, the Nationals’ batters have struck hard, scoring 52 runs over the span of their last eight games.

Despite playing on the road, the Nats have outscored opponents 39-15.

The Nationals need to continue at this pace if they want to keep up with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have won nine straight games, and secure home field advantage in the playoffs.

Starting Pitcher

Gio Gonzalez gets the nod for the Nationals. Over 19 starts, Gonzalez has a 8-4 record with a 2.66 ERA.

Gonzalez is 3-3 over his last six starts, but has been pitching well only allowing five runs in his last four starts.

Also, over 8.1 innings of work against Cincinnati last Friday, Gonzalez allowed only four hits and no runs which prompted manager Dusty Baker’s comments that it was “…as sharp as I’ve seen him and the longest he kept his sharpness.”

Though Gonzalez hasn’t faced the Angels since 2014, he’s 7-2 with a 2,62 ERA over 11 starts against them.

  • Washington is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 games on the road
  • Washington is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games on the road
  • Washington is 2-5 SU in its last 7 games when playing LA Angels

Angels Betting

The Angels don’t have a shot at gaining the division lead, unless the Astros implode, but the Angels still can earn a Wildcard spot being only 3 games behind the New York Yankees, who are currently second.

The Angels lost the first game of this series, but could turn things around in tonight’s game.

Los Angeles has suffered on offense this season. Former MVP Mike Trout did not play for most of the first half of the season, but nevertheless leads the team with 16 homers to his name.

For the season, the team is batting .241, which is 27th, and the 385 runs they have scored is 25th in the league.

Starting Pitcher

Los Angeles is probably calling on Alex Meyer from Triple-A Salt Lake to take the mound tonight. Meyer should be ready to go and has a 3-5 record with a 4.18 ERA.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia is confident that Meyer is ready to go commenting that if “you look where he was last year or even where he was in spring training, and there’s a huge jump. Hopefully, he’ll take another step forward.”

Meyer nevertheless has been inconsistent in his last few major league starts, having two good games against the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Kansas City Royals but stumbling over 3 3/3 innings against the Boston Red Sox and 4 2/3-innings against the New York Yankees when he walked five.

Nationals Trends

  • LA Angels is 3-8 SU in its last 11 games
  • The total has gone UNDER in 5 of LA Angels' last 6 games
  • LA Angels is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games at home

Expert Pick

Though the Nationals are the favorites, I believe the Angels will rain on their parade. Take the Angels to win.
