About the Belmont Stakes
The Belmont Stakes, also known as the "Test of the Champion", is the third and final leg of the Triple Crown thoroughbred horse races. It is held yearly in June at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. The Belmont Stakes is a 1.5 mile (2.4 km) race for three-year-old colts and geldings carrying a weight of 126 pounds (57 kg), and for fillies with a weight of 121 pounds (55 kg).

Belmont Stakes History
The first Belmont Stakes was held in 1867 at Jerome Park in the Bronx, making it the oldest of the Triple Crown events. The race distance has varied over the years, starting out as 1 5/8 miles (2.6 km) and changing several times before finally landing on the current distance of 1.5 miles (2.4 km) in 1926. Secretariat's margin of victory of 31 lengths in 1973 did not only set the record for the Belmont Stakes, but also for the entire history of American Grade 1 stakes races.
