Giants History

The franchise would play its early years at the first Polo Grounds through the 1888 season. The team would split time in 1889 between Oakland Park, St. George Cricket Grounds and the second Polo Grounds, playing the 1890 season there as well. In 1891, the Giants would then move into the third Polo Grounds where they would call home until they relocated to California. In San Francisco, the Giants played their first two seasons in 1958 and 1959 at Seals Stadium before moving into Candlestick Park in 1960, which they would share with the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers. The team would finally move into their baseball stadium, Oracle Park, in 2000.

Pennants

The San Francisco Giants’ eight World Series are the fifth most in the Major Leagues and the second most in the National League behind the St. Louis Cardinals’ 11 titles. The Giants first won the World Series in 1905 over the Philadelphia Athletics, and recently won three World Series championships in the 2010s, with victories over the Texas Rangers (2010), the Detroit Tigers (2012) and the Kansas City Royals (2014). In total, the team has played in 20 World Series, which is a National League record, and has also won 23 NL Pennants, which is also a record. The organization has also won the West Division eight times and have made the playoffs three times as the Wild Card team.

Hall of Famers

The Giants have the most representatives in the Baseball Hall of Fame, which ranks the most out of any major league organization. One of the Giants’ early heroes was right fielder Mel Ott, who played his entire career with the New York Giants from 1926 to 1947. Ott was named an All-Star 12 times and also won a World Series championship in 1933. He would also go on to lead the NL in home runs six times and RBIs once, finishing his playing career batting .304 with 2,876 hits, 511 home runs, and 1,860 runs batted. Ott would also serve as the team’s manager from 1942 to 1948.

One of the most beloved San Francisco Giants is Willie McCovey, who played 19 of his 22 seasons with the Giants, first from 1959 to 1973 and then once more from 1977 to 1980. In his career, McCovey was named to six All-Star Games, was named NL Rookie of the year in 1959 and, a decade later, the NL MVP in 1969. McCovey would finish his career batting .270 with 2,211 hits, 521 home runs, and 1,555 RBIs.
