Dodgers franchise was established in 1883, tracing its roots to Brooklyn, New York, and is one of Major League Baseball’s most historic teams. The team joined the American Association in 1884 and then joined the National League in 1890, winning the NL Championship in its first year as a member club. Between 1883 and 1931, the team was known as the Atlantics, the Grays, the Bridegrooms, the Grooms, the Superbas, the Trolley Dodgers and the Robins. In 1932, the team adopted the Dodgers name. The team would then move to Los Angeles in 1958 and become the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Dodgers History

The team would play its first few seasons at Washington Park in Brooklyn, playing Sunday games at Ridgewood Park. In 1891, the team would move to Eastern Park and would then move again to the new Washington Park in 1898. In 1913, the team would move into historic Ebbets Field, where the ball club would call home until it moved to Los Angeles in 1958. The team would play its first four seasons at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum before moving into Dodger Stadium in 1962, which holds the honors of being the oldest ball park in the Major Leagues west of the Mississippi and the third oldest overall behind Fenway Park and Wrigley Field. Dodger Stadium is also the biggest baseball stadium in the world when it comes to seat capacity.

Pennants

The Los Angeles Dodgers have won six World Series titles, winning their first in 1955 in a seven-game series over the New York Yankees. The team would last win a World Series in 1988, with the Dodgers defeating the Oakland Athletics in five games. The team would have to wait until 2017 before it would return to the World Series, losing in seven games to the Houston Astros. The team would make it back to the Fall Classic one season later, this time falling to the Boston Red Sox in five games. The Dodgers have won a total of 23 NL Pennants and have won the West Division title 17 times. The team has also earned two Wild Card berths in 1996 and 2006.

Hall of Famers

A discussion of Dodgers greats has to start with Jackie Robinson. The second baseman put together a Hall of Fame career and led the team to six World Series, helping the Dodgers win the title in 1955, but his accomplishments are far more reaching than his trophy cabinet. Robinson was the very first African American to play in the Major Leagues with his signing heralding the end of racial segregation in professional baseball. Despite breaking the racial barrier, Robinson endured his share of racist abuse throughout his career as he helped contribute to the civil rights movement. Robinson was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom and his number, 42, has been retired across all the Major League teams, with all players across the league wearing his number on April 15, known as Jackie Robinson Day to honor the trailblazing ballplayer.
