The Atlanta Braves are one of the oldest teams in Major League Baseball, founded in 1871 in Boston as the Boston Red Stockings. Between 1871 and 1952 when the team played in Boston, the franchise was known as the Red Caps, the Beaneaters, the Doves, the Rustlers, the Braves and the Bees. In 1953, the team moved to Milwaukee and became the Milwaukee Braves. In 1966, the team relocated once again, this time to Atlanta as the Atlanta Braves where they have stayed for more than a half century.

Braves History

The team first started playing its games at South End Grounds in Boston from 1871 to 1914, with a short stint at Congress Street Grounds in 1894. In 1914, the team would move to historic Fenway Park until 1915, when the team would move to Braves Field. Once the team moved to Milwaukee in 1953, the Braves then moved to Milwaukee County Stadium where it stayed until 1965. The team would first play its games in Atlanta at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium until 1996 when the club moved to Turner Field at the beginning of the 1997 season. The team would stay there for two decades before it moved into SunTrust Park in 2017.

Pennants

The ball club found early success in 1914 when it won the franchise’s first World Series, pulling off the upset over the heavily favored Philadelphia Athletics and recording the first sweep in World Series history. The team would once again win the World Series in 1957 as the Milwaukee Braves, defeating the New York Yankees in seven games. Then in 1995, the Braves, now in Atlanta, won the franchise’s third World Series title in a six-game series over the Cleveland Indians. The franchise has won 17 NL Pennants, with their first coming all the way back in 1877 and their most recent coming in 1999. The Braves have won the West Division five times and the East Division 13 times, with the team winning the East in 2018 after falling short for the previous five seasons.

Hall of Famers

The Braves have been known for much of their history for their pitching, with knuckleballer Phil Niekro one of the early stars for the Atlanta team, followed later by Tom Glavine, who would be named World Series MVP in 1995, and John Smoltz.

Another Braves legend is Hammerin’ Hank Aaron, who patrolled the Braves outfield from 1954 to 1974. Aaron is the Major League career leader in All-Star Game appearances with 25 and had held the MLB record for total home runs with 755 homers, a record that stood for 33 years. Aaron was also a member of the 1957 World Series club, during which he was named the NL MVP during the regular season. Aside from his home runs, Aaron would finish his career with 3,771 hits, 2,297 RBIs and a batting average of .305.

And one cannot tell the full story of the Braves without mentioning Chipper Jones, who joined the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018. The third baseman was a constant in Atlanta, playing his entire 19-season career with the Braves, and was known for being a consummate teammate and a dangerous offensive weapon. Jones, an eight-time All-Star selection, was also a member of the 1995 World Series team and would win the NL MVP in 1999.
