CFL Game Day Preview: Montreal vs. Toronto

Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Rogers Centre CFL will kick off with a game that features Montreal vs. Toronto. All of the odds for this game and all of the other CFL games can be found at online sportsbook Skybook.

Toronto is just 1-4 on the season, so they need a win, but this game will be special for another reason. The late Teddy Toogood, a legendary Argo who played in an era when blocking on punt returns wasn’t allowed, will be honoured prior to Thursday's kickoff. During one game, Toogood returned two punts for touchdowns.

Toronto will also have revenge as the final score of the first game was Als 40, Argos 17. Argos committed five turnovers and could only force one by the Als, a tipped pass that led to Ricky Foley’s first-career interception. Montreal dominated time of possession, having control of the football for 39:38. Anthony Calvillo would complete 29 of 43 passes for 307 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. His first TD strike, an eight-yard throw to Eric Deslauriers at the 5:13 mark of the first quarter, would give Calvillo his CFL-record 395th career touchdown pass.

Turnovers have destroyed the Argos in each of their last four losses. Only twice this season has a CFL team won a game when it commits more turnovers than the opposition. In each case, it was Calgary. No team has fumbled more often than the Argos (9) and no team has thrown more interceptions than the Argos (7).

For a team accustomed to quick starts, it’s virtually unheard of for Montreal, the CFL’s reigning two-time champs, to enter Week 6 with two losses. Montreal somehow overcame a league-high in penalties last season, but eventually lack of discipline begins to catch up. There’s no time to panic, but with Winnipeg and Hamilton playing well, it’s up to the Als to show up. This is a sign that Toronto may actually have a shot to win this game or at least keep it close.
