Betting on Chicago Cubs

The defending World Series champions aren’t playing as well as they did last year, which has raised questions over their chances of making the playoffs.

They’re in a bit of a slump, losing three of their last five games previous to last night’s game and are currently in second place in the NL Central, 1.5 games behind the Brewers.

However, they have a fair shot of getting back on track, especially with last night’s win. The division is still up for grabs at this point, as no other team has jumped ahead of the pack.

Monday's victory was huge for Chicago. They’ve now won eight of the past 10 meetings over Washington; even if they were forced to use eight pitchers, they held on and saw the Nationals use five in defeat.

Their pitching corps have been inconsistent. So far, the team’s starters have only had 31 quality starts this season, which ties them for 21st in the league.

Not only that, the Cubs also need to improve their performance at bat. This year, the Cubs have a .240 batting average, which is 29th in the league, and their 350 runs is tied for 15th in the league.

Starting Pitching Breakdown

Chicago gives Jake Arrieta the nod tonight. In 15 starts this year, Arrieta is 7-5 with a 4.36 ERA. Arrieta has had a slow start this year, but has finally started getting back to last year’s form.

In his last four starts, Arrieta gave up nine runs, but the team won three of those four starts. He pitched seven solid innings in his last start, allowing one run, helping the Cubs run away with an 11-1 victory over the Miami Marlins.

Arrieta isn’t as dominant as he was in last year’s campaign. “I’m close,” Arrieta said when asked again whether he was close to gaining his dominant form. “I’m really close. The energy level was pretty low, so I wanted to do the best job I could staying over the (pitching) rubber, executing pitches at the bottom of

Betting on the Washington Nationals

The Nationals don’t have anything to boast about when it comes to pitching, but nevertheless they are one of the best teams in the league and currently own the best record in the National League and are third best all-around.

Consistency in both batting and pitching has been key for the Nationals. Their pitching rotation leads the league with 48 quality starts, and their 4.14 ERA is the 10th best in the league.

Washington also has the second best batting average in baseball with 424 runs which is the most in baseball this season. With two MVP candidates, Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman, in their ranks it’ll be hard for the Cubs  to slow them down.

Starting Pitching Breakdown

Matt Scherzer gets the nod tonight for the Nationals. In 15 starts this year, Scherzer has an 8-5 record with a 2.09 ERA, which is the best in the National League.

Scherzer has been very difficult to score against and has allowed four runs in his last five games. He also leads the league in strikeouts.
