About Hollywood Park
Hollywood Park, located in Inglewood, California, opened in 1938 as the Hollywood Turf Club. In 1951, Citation became the first million-dollar-winning horse by winning his final start, the Hollywood Gold Cup. Hollywood Park hosted the inaugural Breeders' Cup in 1984, and also hosted the event in 1987 and 1997. On December 10, 1999, Laffit Pincay, Jr. surpassed Bill Shoemaker's all-time record for race wins by a jockey at Hollywood Park. Citation became racing's first million-dollar earner by winning the 1951 Hollywood Gold Cup under Steve Brooks while making his final start. With a purse of $1,049,725, the 1983 Hollywood Futurity was not only the first million-dollar race for Thoroughbred 2-year-olds, it was the richest race ever staged for thoroughbreds at the time.
