The popularity of prop bets has exploded ever since oddsmakers offered a bet for Chicago Bears Defensive Lineman William “Refrigerator” Perry to score a touchdown in 1986 over the New England Patriots. Perry turned a joke bet into a phenomenon when he lined up at running back and scored, meaning some lucky (and brave) folks cashed in on 75-to-1 odds. Fast forward to the present, and prop betting accounts for over 50% of all bets made on the Super Bowl. They range from practical, game-related things like how many 1st downs the Patriots will make in the game, to the completely superficial, like what color shoes Adam Levine will wear.

So with that in mind, here are some of the more popular bets for Super Bowl LIII (both traditional and prop bets).

To win the game

The Patriots are favored to win with a -2-115 spread, o56 ½ -110 total and -135 money line. Surely the experience of the Patriots in the Super Bowl will come into play here, as they are in their third consecutive appearance and fourth in five years. The Rams are formidable opponents, however, as they boasted one of the best offenses in the game and appeared to have luck on their side as they just barely edged the Saints in the Conference Championship after a controversial call.

Jared Goff to throw the first interception

The money line says that Goff is favored to throw the first interception (-130) and for a good reason; Not only is Goff in the Super Bowl as a super-green second-year starter, but his play has been trailing off for the last part of the season. Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick is undoubtedly savvy to this, and will likely try to adjust his defense to maximize the chance of a Goff error.

Tom Brady most pass attempts

The Patriots play a lot of short passes, and they are experts at moving the ball incrementally. The Rams, on the other hand, tend to try their hand at the long pass, so simply by the nature of the Patriot’s offense, Brady is likely to come out on top in this prop.

Most rushing yards

This is an interesting one because the Patriots Running back Sony Michel has been leading all RBs in the postseason, while Gurley, who was phenomenal in the regular season has struggled. Michel is the favorite to win this prop with a -8 ½ -160 spread. Gurley has had inflammation problems in his knee, which may have been causing the drop in production, but now that he has had 2 whole weeks to rest and recover, he may be a sneaky good underdog for this one.

Coin Toss

The odds here go without saying, but keep in mind that in the last 5 Super Bowls that the Patriots have been in, they have only won 2 coin tosses. If history has anything to do with it, you have to consider them the underdogs.

What Color Shoe will Adam Levine wear at halftime

Right now, white shows as the favorite, but this man wears a lot of black. It may also be worth it to throw some money on pink, as the odds for that color are +2500.
