How Many Games Will Teams Win In The AFC West?

Last year, the competition in the AFC West was brutal. Get this, two teams that won 12 games and another that won nine.

This year, things could get even hairier with the Broncos and Chargers set for the limelight.

Let’s take a look at some projections for the AFC West this season.

AFC West 2017 Win Total Predictions

Denver Broncos

The Broncos are expected to win 8.5 games. After Peyton Manning’s retirement, everyone expected this team to drop off. However, despite having won the Super Bowl the year before last, the Broncos still managed to scrounge up nine wins.

Their biggest issue? Of course, the lack of a quarterback with some experience in the trenches.

Trevor Siemian started for Denver last season, and this year as well, but Broncos new head coach Vance Joseph is probably still hesitant in how confident he is of Siemian’s grit until this season gets started.

Also, there are some questions surrounding the effectiveness of the offensive line. Both Garett Bolles and Ronald Leary have a ton of work ahead of them.

Defense continues to drive this team; expect defensive player of the year Von Miller, Chris Harris, Aqib Talib, Bradley Roby, T.J. Ward and Darian Steward to wreak havoc on offenses.

The Broncos start the season with three home games against the Chargers, Cowboys and Raiders (with a road game against the Bills sandwiched in between and before the bye in Week 5.

Then, it’s the Chargers again, Chiefs and Eagles.

If Siemian plays well and the defense keeps on doing their thing, I expect the Broncos to do well this year.

Over/Under Prediction: OVER 9

H3 Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs are expected to win nine games this year. Last year, they claimed the AFC West title, which was somewhat surprising, but it’ll be harder this season.

KC lost two players at key positions, running back Jamaal Charles and wide receiver Jeremy Maclin and this leave a big hole to fill.

Nevertheless, Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce may do well this year so we’ll see.

Also, Spencer Ware, Charcandrick West and Kareem Hunt are strong options for the running game.

Defensively, the Chiefs aren’t anything to boast about. But, Justin Houston, Marcus Peters and Eric Berry can get the job done.

What doesn’t bode well for KC is their schedule, that includes seven playoff teams from last season, including the Raiders who they’ll play twice.

As such, I don’t expect the Chiefs to make it to the playoffs this year. I don’t even see them winning more than eight games.

Over/Under Prediction: UNDER 9

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers are expected to win 7.5 games this year. Last season, they bottomed out in the AFC with only five wins.

This year, things may be looking up with the Melvin Jordan promising to have a great season ahead of him and, of course, with Antonio Gates and Keenan Allen back in the fold.

This is a loaded offense with the likes of Mike Williams, Tyrell Williams, Travis Benjamin, and Gates and Allen.

Defensively, the Chargers have a few players that are outstanding such as Joey Bosa and Jason Verrett. I expect this defense to be among the top five in the league.

If the Chargers gain a win in Week 1 against the Broncos, you could see a 4-0 start simply because they have three games at home after that game.

Later in the season however, the Chargers’ road gets tough with games against the Raiders, Giants, and Patriots before their bye.

The Chargers will be the biggest surprise in this division, and they will win more than eight games.

Over/Under Prediction: OVER 7.5

Oakland Raiders

The Raiders are expected to win 10 games this season. They’re considered to be the best team in this division and for good reason (apart from having had a 12-win season and the oodles of talent they’re players have.

That said, let’s hope Derek Carr can be healthy enough to start after having suffered a season-ending injury in the second to last game of the regular season last year.

Expect Amari Cooper and Khalil Mack to be better this season. Jared Cooper is a solid offensive line player who should provide protection for Carr and for the newly acquired Marshawn Lynch.

The Raiders schedule is tough nevertheless, with three of four on the road to start followed by home games against the Ravens, Chargers, and Chiefs.

Then it’s on to two road games before the bye and a home stretch against the Pats, Broncos and Giants. It’s certainly won’t be a cake walk, but I expect them to pull through.

Considering a healthy Carr in the lineup and the addition of Marshawn Lynch in the offseason, there is no reason why the Raiders won’t win more than 10 games.

Over/Under Prediction: OVER 10
