Detroit Lions Betting

The Lions turned things around in their first game of the season and won over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1.

Though an injury to Cardinals running back David Johnson paved the way for the win, you have to give credit to Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and kicker Matt Prater for a job well done.

Stafford completed 29 of 41 passes for 292 yards, 4 touchdowns and 1 interception; while Prater pulled double duty when punter Kasey Redfern was pulled from the game because of an injury.

Prater had four punts and hit a 58-yarder to help the Lions gain the win.

The Lions had a tough 2016 season in the rushing attack, something which they hoped would change with a healthy Ameer Abdullah. However, Abdullah only had 30 yards on 15 carries, and the Lions finished the game with 82 total rushing yards.

Detroit needs to step up their game in the running attack lest they be too easy to defend against because of a lack of options.

On defense, Detroit did a good job against Carson Palmer on Sunday, and picked him off on three occasions. They’ll have another shot to add to their number against Eli Manning, who tends to be careless on one or two passes in every game.

However, the Lions can definitely do with a couple of sacks from defensive end Ezekiel “Ziggy” Ansah. Last week against Dallas, Manning was sacked three times and there’s an opening in this game as well for a couple of sacks.

The last time around these two clashed, last December, the Giants won 17-6. It was a disappointing end of season for the Lions who lost four games straight at the tail end which lost them the NFC North lead and the possibility of hosting a playoff game for the first time since 1993.

This game will be close; and, it order for things to work for the Lions they must run the ball to keep the Giants defense under a lid.

Both Abdullah and Theo Riddick need to come together as a backfield threat to take some pressure off Stafford from New York’s pass rush.

Detroit may also have somewhat of a X-factor in wide receiver Kenny Golladay, who came up big with two touchdown receptions in his first game in the NFL.

Though this game will be tough for both teams, it’s going to be slightly harder for the Lions because the Giants will fight tooth and claw to defend their home turf to avoid an 0-2 start.

New York Giants Analysis

The Giants had their sights set on starting the season with a win, but couldn’t hold back the Dallas Cowboys in their first game of the season.

Last season, the Giants finished second in the NFC East, defeating the Cowboys twice. But, this time around, New York had their best offensive weapon, Odell Beckham Jr., sidelined because of an ankle injury.

It’s still not clear whether Beckham will play tonight, but if he’s not it’s certainly clear the Giants will face problems moving the ball once more.

Against Dallas, Manning finished  29 of 38 for 220 yards and 1 interception. New York’s running game was even worse than Detroit’s last week as the team finished with 35 total rushing yards.

The Cowboys cut through the Giants defense.    Dak Prescott finished the game completing 24 of 39 passes for 268 yards and 1 touchdowns, while Ezekiel Elliott added 104 rushing yards on 24 carries.

Without Beckham on the field, the Giants running game has no claws, which means the defense will have to step up until the running back returns.

The Giants defense is full of talent, with good pass rushers up front and a deep secondary.

Pierre-Paul and Olivier Vernon are a 1-2 punch on the outside, while Damon Harrison is a threat on the inside.

Collins is arguably one of the best safeties in the game; while there aren’t many trios in the NFL better than Jenkins, Eli Apple and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie as cornerbacks.

When Beckham returns to the lineup, the offense will be up to snuff, until then, everyone has to pick up the slack to keep them in the hunt for the playoffs.

Lions vs Giants Betting Trends

  • Detroit is 1-5 ATS in its last 6 games
  • Detroit is 1-4 SU in its last 5 games
  • The total has gone UNDER in 9 of Detroit's last 12 games
  • NY Giants is 9-4 SU in its last 13 games
  • The total has gone UNDER in 8 of NY Giants' last 10 games

Pick and Prediction

The Giants are the 3.5-point favorites to win this game, the over/under on total points scored is 43.5.

The Giants can’t afford to start the season 0-2, but if Beckham isn’t playing, I don’t see how they can avoid it. Take the Lions +3.5.

Bonus Pick: This will be a low-scoring game. The UNDER is a lock.
