The Seattle Mariners have been around for more than four decades but are still looking for their first World Series championship. The Mariners began as an expansion team in 1977, named after the marine culture of Seattle, where the team has been since the beginning. Despite having had several prominent players in the club’s history, the Mariners struggled for most of their early years, not finishing with a winning record until the 1991 season.

Mariners History

The Mariners played their games in the early years at the Kingdome, which was located in Seattle’s SoDo neighborhood and shared with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks and the NBA’s Seattle Supersonics. In 1999, the franchise moved to Safeco Field, now known as T-Mobile Park, which is a retractable roof baseball stadium also located in SoDo. The roof is also unique in that while it does cover the field and fans from the rainy Seattle weather, it is not completely closed and does not allow for climate control inside the ballpark.

Pennants

The Mariners are just one of seven teams to have never won a World Series championship and one of two to have never played in a World Series, with the other team being the expansion Washington Nationals. That being said, the Mariners have had some success during their existence, having been to the playoffs four times – winning the AL West three times in 1995, 1997 and 2001, and earning a Wild Card berth in 2000. As of the end of the 2018 season, the Mariners have not made the postseason since 2001, which gives them the undistinguished honor of holding the longest playoff drought in any of the Big Four sports in North America. The team did, however, win 116 games in 2001, which set the American League record for wins in a season and tied the 1906 Chicago Cubs for the Major League record. The 2001 Mariners would go on to defeat the Cleveland Indians in five games in the American League Division Series but would lose to the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series.

Hall of Famers

During the Mariners’ stretch of success, one of the most prominent players to don the Seattle uniform was center fielder Ken Griffey Jr., known affectionately as “The Kid.” Griffey would play for Seattle from 1989 to 1999 and would then end his career with the Mariners, playing in Seattle from 2009 to 2010. Griffey was voted into the Hall of Fame in 2016 with a then-record 99.30 percent of the vote due in large part to his powerful bat, with his 630 home runs ranking seventh all-time in Major League Baseball.

Younger fans will remember stars like Ichiro Suzuki, who retired in 2019 after setting franchise records for hits (2,542), batting average (.322) and stolen bases (438) and helped broaden the MLB’s appeal overseas in Japan and throughout Asia. While his star has faded over the years, pitcher Felix Hernandez will be remembered as one of the Mariners’ greats for his dominance on the mound, earning the nickname “King Felix” while setting franchise records for most wins (168) and most strikeouts (2,467).
