Padres History
From 1969 to 2003, the San Diego Padres played their games at Qualcomm Stadium, which was also known as San Diego Stadium and later Jack Murphy Stadium, which the club shared with the NFL’s San Diego Chargers. In 2004, the team moved into Petco Park, which has hosted the All-Star Game in 2016. The ballpark has also hosted the World Baseball Classic, first in 2006 and then again in 2009.
Pennants
The Padres have not won a World Series championship but have made the Fall Classic twice franchise history. The Padres first made the World Series in 1984, defeating the Chicago Cubs in five games to win the National League Championship Series before the Detroit Tigers defeated them in five games. The Padres would return to the World Series in 1998, defeating the Atlanta Braves in six games. San Diego would then go on to face the New York Yankees in the Fall Classic and would get swept for their second World Series loss. The Padres have won the West Division five times in 1984, 1996, 1998, 2005 and 2006, but have not made the postseason since their last division title.
Hall of Famers
Earning the title of “Mr. Padre” during his 20 years playing in the Major Leagues (1982-2001) all with the San Diego Padres, Tony Gwynn was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007 in his first year of eligibility. During his career, Gwynn was named to the All-Star team 15 times and also collected eight NL batting champion titles, five Gold Glove Awards, and seven Silver Slugger Awards, and played in both of the Padres’ World Series appearances. Considered one of the best hitters in baseball, Gwynn would finish his career batting .338 with 3,141 total hits, 135 home runs, and 1,138 runs-batted-in. Gwynn was also known to have turned down bigger offers to stay with the Padres for his entire career and is celebrated as the best and most beloved San Diego Padre.
Pitcher Trevor Hoffman is known as one of the top closers in baseball, becoming the first pitcher to reach both the 500 and 600-save milestone while also holding the title of Major League Baseball’s all-time saves leader from 2006 to 2011. Hoffman would spend the bulk of his career in San Diego, playing more than 15 seasons out of his 18 years in the majors in a Padres uniform. Hoffman was named to the All-Star team seven times in his career and was the runner-up twice for the NL Cy Young Award and would finish his career with 15 20-save seasons, 14 30-save seasons and nine 40-save seasons.
