Cardinals History
From 1882 to 1892, the club played its games at Sportsman’s Park while playing in the American Association. The team would move to Robison Park starting in the 1893 season, and then once again to Sportsman’s Park in 1920, which was also known as Busch Stadium. In 1966, the team would move into Busch Memorial Stadium and would call it home for the next 40 years, before the team moved into Busch Stadium, also known as New Busch Stadium, in 2006, where the team has remained since.
Pennants
With 11 World Series championships to its name, the St. Louis Cardinals ball club is one of the most successful in the majors, and the club’s 19 NL Pennants puts them in third place in the National League. The Cardinals won their first World Series title in 1926 over the New York Yankees and most recently won the Fall Classic in 2011, with a seven-game series victory over the Texas Rangers. The team also won four American Association titles in its early days and has also won 10 Central Division titles and three East Division titles. The team has also made the playoffs three times in 2001, 2011 and 2012 as the Wild Card team.
Hall of Famers
Considered by many to be one of the greatest hitters in baseball, Stan Musial played his entire 22 years in the majors playing for the St. Louis Cardinals. Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969 on the first ballot, Musial batted .331 during his career, compiling 3,630 hits, 475 home runs, and 1,951 runs-batted-in. Musial was named to the All-Star roster a whopping 20 times in his career and was a part of three World Series championship teams in 1942, 1944 and 1946. Musial was also given NL MVP honors three times and was the NL batting champion seven times and the NL RBI leader twice.
Pitcher Bob Gibson also left his mark on the Cardinals franchise, spending his entire 17-year career with the Cardinals. Gibson was a central part of two World Series championship teams in 1964 and 1967, winning the World Series MVP in both years, and was also awarded the Cy Young Award twice. An All-Star selection nine times, Gibson was also named the NL MVP in 1968 and was awarded the Gold Glove nine times. He would finish his career with 251 wins, 3,117 strikeouts and a career ERA of 2.91.
