Yankees History

The team began playing in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles before it was moved to New York City in 1903, where it adopted the nickname of the New York Highlanders. That name stuck around for about a decade when the team was renamed the New York Yankees in 1913, spawning the biggest franchise in Major League Baseball. Since becoming the Yankees, the franchise first played its games at the Polo Grounds from 1913 to 1922 when the first Yankee Stadium was built. The team then played at Yankee Stadium until 2009 (save for a brief stint in the ‘70s where the team played at Shea Stadium), when they moved into the new Yankee Stadium.

Pennants

The Yankees are the most successful major league sports team in the country, with 27 World Series championships and 40 AL Pennants to its name. The team won its first World Series title in 1923 and has most recently lifted the trophy in 2009, which is also the last time the Yankees won the AL Pennant, though it has made the playoffs with a Wild Card berth four times since then. The Yankees have also won the East Division 18 times in franchise history.

Hall of Famers

When it comes to historic Yankees, there is a plethora to choose from. However one name rises above the rest: Babe Ruth. After being sold to the Yankees by the rival Boston Red Sox, Ruth continued his stellar career and established himself to be what many consider the best baseball player of all time, setting records for career home runs, RBIs, bases on balls, slugging percentage and on-base plus slugging.

But beyond Ruth, there are so many other names that come to mind when thinking about the great Yankees of the past, like Ruth’s companion on the Murderer’s Row lineup in 1927, Lou Gehrig. Other prominent names from Yankee history include Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio, Casey Stengel, Phil Rizzuto, Mickey Mantle, and Whitey Ford, to name a few.

In more recent years, the Yankees have continued to dazzle fans with stars like Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter, both expected to be locked for the Baseball Hall of Fame. Pitchers Andy Pettitte, C.C. Sabathia, and Mariano Rivera, were also dominant on the mound for the Yankees and helped lead the franchise to its most recent World Series win in 2009. The Yankees have continued to flex their financial muscle in recent years and have not shied away from making big free agent acquisitions, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise to see the Yankees stay competitive year in and year out.
