The team began playing in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles before it was moved to New York City in 1903, where it adopted the nickname of the New York Highlanders. That name stuck around for about a decade when the team was renamed the New York Yankees in 1913, spawning the biggest franchise in Major League Baseball. Since becoming the Yankees, the franchise first played its games at the Polo Grounds from 1913 to 1922 when the first Yankee Stadium was built.
