The Milwaukee Brewers are still looking for the franchise’s first World Series title, an achievement that has eluded the ball club since its foundation in 1969. The team started in Seattle as the Seattle Pilots, an American League expansion team. One season later, the Pilots moved to Milwaukee and adopted the “Brewers” name to reflect the city’s brewing industry. A member of the American League for almost three decades, the Brewers made the jump to the National League in 1998 and would be joined by the Houston Astros as the only two teams to have changed leagues.

Brewers History

The franchise played its first and only season in Seattle at Sick’s Stadium in Rainier Valley. After moving to Milwaukee, the team would play at Milwaukee County Stadium through the 2000 season. Milwaukee County Stadium also has the distinction of being one of the filming locations for the film “Major League,” even though the movie is about the fictionalized Cleveland Indians. In 2001, the club would move into Miller Park, which has the only fan-shaped retractable roof in North America.

Pennants

The team has never won a World Series championship in franchise history, coming the closest in 1982 when the Milwaukee Brewers made the World Series after winning the ALCS over the California Angels. The Brewers would then fall in seven games to the St. Louis Cardinals. The team would make it back to the postseason in 2008 as a Wild Card team and would win the NL Central in 2011 and 2018. In 2011, the Brewers would again see their postseason end at the hands of the Cardinals, this time in the NLCS. The Brewers would again make it to the NLCS in 2018 after sweeping the Colorado Rockies in the division series but would fall to the Los Angeles Dodgers in seven games, coming short of a return trip to the Fall Classic.

Hall of Famers

For almost a decade and a half, Paul Molitor was a feared batter and speedster for the Milwaukee Brewers, playing with the team from 1978 to 1992 and was a part of the 1982 squad that made the franchise’s first World Series appearance. Molitor was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004, finishing his career with a .308 batting average while collecting 3,319 hits, 234 home runs, 1,307 runs batted in and 504 stolen bases. After his retirement, Molitor would also go on to manage the Minnesota Twins from 2015 to 2018.

Robin Yount would spend his entire 20 years playing in Major League Baseball with the Milwaukee Brewers from 1976 to 1993, playing shortstop and center field. Yount made his big leagues debut at just 18 years old and would collect three All-Star appearances, two AL MVPs, one Gold Glove Award and three Silver Slugger Awards. Yount is also a member of the 3,000 Hit Club, amassing 3,142 hits, 251 home runs and 1,406 runs batted-in while batting .285 in his career. Yount would be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999 in his first year of eligibility.
