One of the youngest teams in the Major Leagues, the Colorado Rockies are still searching for their first World Series title. The city of Denver was granted with an expansion team in 1991 and adopted the name “Rockies” in reference to the mountain range. Rockies History
The Colorado Rockies would play their first two seasons in Denver at Mile High Stadium, sharing the field with the NFL’s Denver Broncos, while their own baseball stadium was being built in downtown Denver. In 1995, Coors Field was finished with construction, and the Rockies moved into their new home. During construction, workers unearthed many dinosaur fossils in the work site, which is the reason behind the Rockies’ triceratops mascot, Dinger. Coors Field is also the first ballpark to have an underground heating system and features purple seats in the upper deck to mark the elevation of one mile above sea level.
The team has never won the World Series, but it came close in 2007, making the World Series before being swept by the Boston Red Sox in four games. The Rockies would win 14 of their final 15 regular season games to earn a spot in the playoffs as a Wild Card team that season. That Colorado team would sweep the Philadelphia Phillies in three games in the NL Division Series and would go on to sweep the Arizona Diamondbacks in four games in the NL Championship Series. The Rockies have never won the West Division, but have made the playoffs five times as a Wild Card team, the most recent coming in 2018, when the club defeated the Chicago Cubs in the Wild Card game before losing to the Milwaukee Brewers in an NLDS sweep.
Hall of Famers and Famous Players
One of the most famous Rockies is first baseman Todd Helton, who spent his entire career with Colorado from 1997 to 2013. Helton was named an All-Star five times and also won the Silver Slugger four times and Gold Glove three times. Helton is also one of the best Colorado Rockies from a statistical perspective, holding franchise records with 2,519 hits, 369 home runs, 1,401 runs scored, 1,406 runs batted in, 4,292 total bases and 2,247 games played, among others. Helton was also the MLB batting champion and the MLB RBI leader in 2000. His number is the only Rockies player to be retired by the team.
Right fielder Larry Walker spent 10 of his 17 Major League seasons with the Rockies, playing in Colorado from 1995 to 2004. Over the course of his career, Walker batted .313 and compiled 2,160 hits, 383 home runs and 1,311 runs batted in. Walker was also named an All-Star five times, with four of those All-Star game appearances coming as a member of the Rockies. Walker has also won seven Gold Gloves and three Silver Sluggers in his career.
