One of the oldest teams in Major League Baseball, the Cincinnati Reds can trace its origins to 1876, when a ball club named the Cincinnati Reds was formed in the Queen City as part of the National League. That club would eventually get expelled from the league, which prompted a Cincinnati Enquirer sports editor to form the independent ball club, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, which would join the American Association. The Red Stockings would then move into the National League in 1890 and become the Cincinnati Reds. In 1954, the Reds would become the Cincinnati Redlegs for the next five years before returning to the Reds nickname in 1959.

Cincinnati Reds History

The franchise first opened in Cincinnati playing at Bank Street Grounds from its first two seasons before moving into League Park from 1884 to 1893 and then into the second League Park from 1894 to 1901. From 1902 to 1911, the team would play at the Palace of the Fans before the team moved into Crosley Field for the 1912, which would be their home all the way until 1970. The team would then move into Riverfront Stadium through the 2002 season, after which they moved into Great American Ball Park along the banks of the Ohio River.

Pennants

The Reds have won five World Series titles, the first coming in 1919 with Cincinnati defeating the Chicago White Sox, 5-3. The team would win its second championship in 1940, a seven-game series win over the Detroit Tigers. The Reds would win back-to-back World Series in 1975 and 1976 over the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees respectively. The Reds won its fifth World Series title in 1990, sweeping the defending champions Oakland Athletics in four games. The team has won a total of nine NL Pennants and has won the division title a total of 10 times, (three with the NL Central and seven with the NL West). The team has also made the postseason in 2013 as the Wild Card team.

Reds Hall of Famers

Despite having been left out of the Baseball Hall of Fame for allegations that he gambled on baseball games while he was playing and managing, Pete Rose is the all-time career leader in hits (4,256), singles (3,215) and outs (10,328), while also holding the record for the most games played with 3,562 and at-bats with 14,053. Rose, who played for the Reds from 1963 to 1978 and then again from 1984 to 1986, was named to 17 All-Star appearances and won three World Series titles, including two with the Reds. He was also named the NL MVP in 1973 and was the Reds World Series MVP in 1975.

Catcher Johnny Bench played his entire career with the Cincinnati Reds from 1967 to 1983 and is considered by many to be the best catcher in baseball history. Bench was named to 14 All-Star Game appearances and was named NL MVP twice. Bench was also a part of the back-to-back World Series titles, named the World Series MVP in 1976. Bench was a Gold Glove Award winner 10 times and finished his career batting .267 with 2,048 hits, 389 home runs and 1,376 RBIs.
