Orioles History

The franchise began in Milwaukee as the Milwaukee Brewers, no relation at all to the current Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central, where they stayed for just one year before they relocated to St. Louis as the St. Louis Browns. The team stayed in St. Louis until 1953, where they were bought by a group of Baltimore leaders and then became the Baltimore Orioles, which they have been ever since. Before the team moved into Oriole Park at Camden Yards in 1992, the club played its games at Memorial Stadium on Baltimore’s 33rd Street.

The Orioles’ glory days were in the early decades of the club’s time in Baltimore, with the O’s winning three World Series titles in 1966, 1970 and 1983. More than a decade later, the team hit a rough patch beginning in 1998, which began a run of 14-straight losing seasons until the Buck Showalter-Dan Duquette manager-GM duo led the Orioles to three postseason appearances in the late 2010s, which included a division title and a trip to the ALCS in 2014 for the first time in 17 years. However, in 2018, the team moved on from Showalter and Duquette after the team finished 47-115, which was a franchise record for futility. Aside from their World Series titles, the Orioles have also won seven AL pennants and nine division titles.

Orioles Hall of Famers

With its storied history, the Baltimore Orioles boast plenty of Hall of Fame players that are considered Baltimore legends. The most prominent Oriole is 21-year team veteran Cal Ripken Jr., nicknamed “Iron Man” for his record of consecutive games played set at 2,632, which broke Lou Gehrig’s streak. Outfielder Frank Robinson is also remembered for winning the AL MVP in 1966 with the Orioles while hitting for the Triple Crown and helping to lead the Orioles to their first two World Series titles in 1966 and 1970. After he retired as a player, he became the first black MLB manager in 1975 with the Cleveland Indians and then finally returned to manage the Orioles in 1988.

Brooks Robinson is another beloved Oriole, having spent his entire 23-year career in Baltimore, which still stands as a record for the longest-career spent with one team, and is considered one of the best defensive third basemen in MLB history. Pitcher and three-time Cy Young winner Jim Palmer was a central part to all three of the Orioles’ World Series championships, which included a complete game shutout in the 1966 World Series, landing him the honor of the youngest player to do so. Palmer has since returned to the Orioles as a color commentator for their game broadcasts.
