Mexico

Mexico comes into this tournament eager to convince the world of its prowess as a soccer nation, having made advances in the last couple years towards winning major championships. After a horrible 7-0 loss to Chile in the 2016 Copa America Centenario quarterfinals, Mexico has gone 17-5-6 in international play since. They also are one of only three countries to have advanced past the group stage of the last six World Cup tournaments. This year they have a very potent attack that offers many options. Lead by Javier Hernandez, a supporting group of Oribe Peralta, Hirving Lozano and Jesus Corona make up a group of attackers that are very dangerous if they catch defenses sleeping.

Korea

Korea is the long shot to make it out of this group they will likely lose all of their games, including this one. They have been struggling as of late and limped into the World Cup berth. They drew 0-0 with Jamaica in January of this year, and then lost both of their March friendly matches to Poland and Northern Ireland. In AFC qualifying, they finished 7 points behind the #1 seed Iran and yielded 10 goals, which was the second-worst total in the qualifying group. Still, they have a respectable history, having qualified for every World Cup tournament since 1990, being one of only six teams to accomplish such a feat. They had a magical run in 2002, when they co-hosted the tournament with Japan, making it all the way to the semi finals and finishing in fourth place. They are the most successful team from their region, having participated in more World Cups than any other AFC country with 10. While they only have two AFC cups to their name, they have been finalists on four occasions and finished in third place four other times in that tournament. Their all-time win/loss record in the World Cup is 5-9-17, putting them in 26th place among all countries, ahead of teams like Colombia, Croatia, Nigeria and Peru.

Match Overview

Mexico is the favorite to win this match, they are a better squad who is more organized and have been running on all cylinders as of late, whereas South Korea has had struggles in their last couple of matches. Unless South Korean stars Son Heung-min from Tottenham Hotspur and Ki Sung-Yueng from Swansea City can play way above their heads and carry the Koreans, there is little chance for anything other than a Mexico victory here.
