Match Preview: Poland vs Senegal, Group H, June 19

On Tuesday June 19th at 11am Eastern in Moscow, Poland and Senegal will meet for the second match of group H action. By all accounts this is a very even match-up, with Poland holding a slight edge. Both countries will be coming into this game ready to get back in the thick of World Cup competition after long absences. Poland last appeared in 2006, while Senegal has been out since 2002. Poland is lead by goal scorer Robert Lewandowski, who lead all European Qualifiers in goals with 16. He is supported by a very able cast against a Senegal team which won their qualifying group and is lead by another star in Liverpool's Sadio Mane. These two teams have no match history prior to this game. Who do you think is going to win this match, will it be a tie? Poland

Poland has been on an upswing ever since the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers, having made it to the quarter-finals of the Euro 2016 tournament, in which they beat Germany for the first time in their history during the qualifying stages. They were eliminated in that tournament by eventual champ Portugal, however. Poland then began qualifying for Russia 2018 later that year, and was put in a group in which no team had appeared in the 2014 tournament, which gave Poland an easy path to the 2018 World Cup. Lewandowski took this as his opportunity to shine and netted hat tricks in three different games (vs. Denmark, Romania and Armenia) en route to qualifying with an 8-1-1 record.

Senegal

Senegal's appearance at the World Cup in 2002 was the only World Cup they have participated in until now. They made it to the quarter finals that year, giving them probably one of the best winning percentages at the World Cup. It took another ten years or so for the team to achieve anything of note, but after a quarter finals appearance at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations and a successful 2018 World Cup qualifying run, it seems that Senegal is ready to prove itself on the world stage again. Undefeated in qualifying, Senegal disposed of a relatively difficult group that included South Africa, Cape Verde, and Burkina Faso. Going 4-2-0, they spread the scoring out among 8 different players, with only Cheikh N'Doye and Diafra Sako netting more than one goal (each scored two). Since having qualified, Senegal has played two friendly matches that ended in draws against Uzbekistan and Bosinia and Herzegovina. Dating back to March of 2017, Senegal has only lost two matches, making for a 7-9-2 record in that time.

Match overview

While this game is Poland's to win, it is not going to be an easy side against Senegal team that has decent talent at every position and features a diverse attack. Both teams should have a similar task at hand; getting the most out of their star player. Both Lewandowski and Sane are huge threats offensively and neutralizing them will be essential to winning. With that in mind, one knock against Poland is that they do have a porous defense, having allowed the most goals against in their qualifying group. Should Senegal manage to expose this weakness and free up Sane for scoring opportunities, they will greatly improve their chances of winning.
