Match Preview: England vs Belgium, Group G, June 28

The most interesting matchup of group G comes on Thursday June 28th in Kaliningrad, Russia at 2pm Eastern time when England takes on Belgium. These are the top two teams in group G, according to our World Cup Betting odds, with Belgium expected to go first in the group and England second. After both teams went defeated in their first two games, this matchup will define who gets those top two spots. These two teams have a long history of playing one another, dating back to 1921. England holds the better record in those games with 15 wins, 4 draws, and 2 ties. The last time these teams met was in 2012, When England won an International friendly 1-0.

England

After a long period of suffering, things are finally starting to look up for the English National Football team. They have won in convincing fashion in their first two games of the World Cup, a 2-1 thriller over Tunisia and a 6-1 thumping of Panama. Captain Harry Kane is doing what good captains do, providing both leadership off the field and results on it. In those two games, he scored five goals, three of which came in the Panama game. With the wins, England has locked up its spot in the round of 16 and should they continue to play the kind of disciplined, driven soccer that we have seen up to this point, there is no reason why they can't advance deeper into the quarters and semis.

Belgium

Belgium tore through qualifying with a 10-0 record. They ripped apart Panama and Tunisia in their first two group games with a combined score of 8-2. They have been one of the most impressive teams at the World Cup so far, playing through the competition without as much as a bump in the road. With qualification out of the way, the Belgians will likely sit some of their players that are holding yellow cards such as Romelu Lukaku, Jan Vertonghen, Kevin De Bruyne and Thomas Meunier. Coach Martinez has referred to this matchup against England as a 'celebration game' after having already qualified, but with first place meaning a chance to avoid Brazil in the round of 16, all of Belgium is hoping that he is not celebrating too soon.

Match Overview

The yellow cards are what make this game interesting. Since both teams are already qualified, this match is to be played for first place and the chance to avoid Brazil in the round of 16. England, thanks to their excellent discipline in the first two games, holds a bit of an advantage as far as players go. De Bruyne and Lukaku are enormous pieces of Belgium's attack, and missing them is going to hurt Belgium, even if they do have decent reserves in. England meanwhile will field a more intact team that is coming off an absolute blowout of a game vs Panama. As long as his players are able to maintain concentration against Belgium, they should have the upper hand. Neither coach plans on changing anything regarding style of play, so this one should come down to the players on the field.
