Match Preview: Germany vs Mexico, Group F, June 17

The Germans will face an early test in their effort to win a fifth World Cup in Russia this year when they take on a strong Mexican team that is eager to show the world how serious of a soccer nation it is. Germany is coming into the game having won not only the last World Cup in Brazil, but they are also champions of the 2017 Federations Cup and winners of their UEFA qualifying group. Mexico, meanwhile, also finished atop their qualifying group and have been strong as of late, posting a 3-1-1 record in friendly matches since finishing qualifying. This game will also be a rematch of the 2017 Confederations Cup semifinal, which Germany won 4-1. Who do you think is gonna win? Germany

Coming into this tournament as defending champions, Germany is in a position to tie Brazil for the most World Cups for a single nation with five. With another World Cup championship, they can realistically lay claim to being the best soccer nation on the planet along with the Brazilians. This game against Mexico will be a true test of how seriously they want to pursue that moniker. The Germans are on a roll, too, having stormed through qualifying with a 10-0 record while compiling a +39 goal differential. They have however gone 0-3-1 in their last four friendly matches however, but that is likely due to Manager Joachim Low testing out different players and formations before the start of the World Cup.

Mexico

Mexico comes into this tournament eager to convince the world of its prowess as a soccer nation, having made advances in the last couple years towards winning major championships. After a horrible 7-0 loss to Chile in the 2016 Copa America Centenario quarterfinals, Mexico has gone 17-5-6 in international play. They have a very potent attack that offers many options. Lead by Javier Hernandez, a supporting group of Oribe Peralta, Hirving Lozano and Jesus Corona make up a group of attackers that can catch the German defense sleeping if they are not paying attention.

Match Overview

This game will most likely be a walk for the Germans. If they show up ready and running on all cylinders, than Mexico does not have much of a chance. Germany is incredibly deep too, so even if a poor performance or an injury to their top player causes someone to come out of the starting lineup, they can easily be replaced by someone on the bench. To give an example of just how deep this German team is, they won the 2017 confederations cup without Jérôme Boateng, Mats Hummels, Manuel Neuer, Toni Kroos, Mesut Özil, Thomas Müller, Mario Götze, Ilkay Gündogan, Marco Reus, Sami Khedira and Leroy Sané. As mentioned earlier, Mexico was one of the victims of the German football machine in that tournament. According to the lines at Skybook.ag, the Germans are the odds on-favorites to win by a fairly wide margin.
