NFL preseason is featured on Monday night football this week as the New York Jets vs. Houston Texans take center stage. The New York Jets have made some wonderful additions to their team and are considered one of the favorites from the AFC to go to the Super bowl. Head Coach Rex Ryan has always believed that his team can win the Super bowl and this year is no different. Ryan has not always focused on winning in the preseason as his team is just 4-4 in his last few years at the helm. In the first week of the preseason, Ryan has yet to win a game and he is 0-2 in his career as the front man for the Jets.
Ryan has to be careful that his team does not get hurt in the preseason but they get some real action. Center Nick Mangold left practice because of an undisclosed injury earlier this week and this is what the Jets need to avoid. Plaxico Burress will not make the trip after getting nicked up in his return to the NFL.
Ryan has announced that his starters will play the first quarter in this game against Houston. The team will need to look better than they did not Friday during practice. The team drills were marred with false start penalties and interceptions. The Texans also have some kinks that they need to work out.
This year the team will use Wade Phillips' new 3-4 defensive scheme, to try and improve on a unit that was miserable a year ago at playing defense. On offense superstar running back Arian Foster will sit out this game with a tight hamstring. Backups Steve Slaton and Ben Tate are also nursing hamstring injuries which will leave most of the running to Derrick Ward and Chris Ogbonnaya. Coach Gary Kubiak reiterated Saturday that his starters likely will line up for only 10-12 plays in the preseason opener against the New York Jets.
With both starters seeing limited action this game will come down to the depth of each unit as to who will win this game.
