San Diego Chargers (5-2) vs. Denver Broncos (5-1), Thursday, October 23, 8:30 PM. ET.

The Chargers and Broncos are in a close race in the AFC West, which makes this rivalry game bigger than it has been in some time. The Chargers lost their season opener against the Arizona Cardinals in a game they were in control of until the final quarter. Since then they have been on a roll, winning five straight games until their loss against Kansas City on Sunday.

San Diego will be facing their toughest test of the season against a team that has defeated some of the best teams in the NFL. Phillip Rivers will try to rebound from his worst game of the season, and lead his team to victory on Thursday.

The Chargers have the 6th best passing game in the NFL, and they should be able to move the ball against Denver and their 18th ranked pass defense. They will need to run the ball better than they did against Kansas City, because they only had 69 yards on the ground against the Chiefs.

It will be tough for them to run effectively against Denver, because they have the 3rd best run defense in the league, but they have to find a way to get their ground game going, to make things easier on Phillip Rivers.

Since their Super Bowl loss to the Seattle Seahawks last season, the Broncos have been focused on getting back to the championship game. They added key free agents to bolster their defense, which was one of their weaknesses last season, and added receiver Emmanuel Sanders to replace Eric Decker, who left the team as a free agent during the offseason.

Their investments have been paying off so far, because their defense is better than it was last year, and their offense hasn’t lost a step, despite the loss of Decker. Peyton Manning is still playing well, and broke the record for most touchdown passes in a career against the 49ers on Sunday.

Manning will have a tough time against the Chargers pass defense, which is the 3rd best in the league, but he is very hard to contain, so he should still have some success throwing the ball against San Diego. The Broncos running game is 25th in the league, but has improved in the last two games, so they should be able to run the ball effectively against the Chargers and their 13th ranked run defense.

Game Line: The Broncos are favored to win the game by 7.5 points, the Over/Under is 50.5 points.

Personal Pick: The Broncos know that they have to put some distance between themselves and the other teams in their division, especially the Chargers, so they will find a way to get the win at home.
