Pacquiao vs. Algieri To Really Turn Up the Heat

The WBO Welterweight title bout between Manny Pacquiao and Chris Algieri this Saturday night in Macau is going to be one of the most anticipated bouts of the year. This bout will feature two fighters who will be going after each other in a matchup that is much closer than what it looks like on paper. This bout at the Venetian in Macau on HBO pay-pay-view is expected to be a real thrill in terms of what people are going to get out of it.

General Preview

On the surface, Manny Pacquiao has a much greater amount of experience and has actually held a title for some time, specifically the WBO Welterweight title. Meanwhile, Chris Algieri might be undefeated but he is a newcomer in comparison and hasn't even done much outside New York. Still, this is going to be a rather tight matchup that could have lasting implications including the potential for whoever wins to possibly fight Floyd Mayweather someday.

A Pacquiao Primer

The big thing about Pacquiao is that he has moved from one weight class to the next throughout his career and has been dominant in everything. At 56-5-2 with 38 knockouts, the Filipino Slugger has gone from flyweight to lightweight to welterweight and has won many titles over the years. He has gone through some pressure in recent time after his losses to Timothy Bradley and Juan Manual Marquez and hasn't gotten a knockout win since 2009 but his speed and skill are still intact.

An Algieri Analysis

At 20-0 with eight knockouts, Chris Algieri has more than enough experience in the ring as he even competed as a kickboxer before turning his attention to traditional boxing. Today the King of New York has landed plenty of wins with eight coming since the start of 2012 including a win for the WBO Light Welterweight title. He hasn't gotten a TKO since early 2012 but he did manage to get a referee's technical decision against Wilfredo Acuna last year.

Prediction

Both of these fighters have more than enough experience and are suited for one of the world's biggest stages as they will take each other on at the Venetian in Macau. Still, while the two fighters are experienced, Manny Pacqiuao has the most championship experience and has shown himself to be capable of keeping his speed intact. However, Chris Algieri is not known for being all that easy to knock down. In the end, expect Pacquiao to get a unanimous decision in this bout; the odds of him getting a knockout in his win are not all that strong.

Conclusion

The big question that will come about after this match will be whether or not the winner is going to take on Floyd Mayweather. Either way, this should still give Chris Algieri the exposure he is looking for. As for Manny Pacqiuao, his skills have impressive over the years but the big question for him is if he's going to be capable of converting this into a possible fight with Mayweather; the payday and pay-per-view numbers for that match could set new records.
