Weekend Picks and Predictions

Los Angeles Clippers vs Oklahoma City Thunder

When:  March 16, 2018, 8:00 PM ET
Where: Chesapeake Energy Arena
Spread: Thunder -5
Over/Under: 223.5

Analysis: The Clippers head to Oklahoma City to face the Thunder and try to pay them back for having beaten them back in Jan. 4, 127-117, when they last played.

After winning over the Hawks, Oklahoma City pushed their winning streak to four games, which means they head into this contest having picked up momentum to knock down the Clippers that are fresh off a loss to the Houston Rockets.

Los Angeles, however, now sports Tobias Harris after having traded Blake Griffin to the Pistons which might change things for the Clippers this time around.

Along with Lou Williams, Harris has been a key player for the Clippers since his arrival to LA and should present an interesting challenge for the Westbrook-led Thunder.

Russell Westbrook is on a warpath with 100 career triple-doubles, joining the likes of Magic Johnson and Jason Kidd as the only players in NBA history to reach this mark.

However, in order for Westbrook to do his job, Paul George will have to step up and do a decent job of guarding Harris.

Prediction: After back-to-back games, the Clippers may be a tad slow heading into this game. The Thunder will jump on the advantage and win the game.

Houston Rockets vs New Orleans Pelicans

When:  March 17, 2018, 7:00 PM ET
Where: Smoothie King Center
Spread: Rockets -6
Over/Under: 229

Analysis: As mentioned above, the Rockets are fresh off a win over the Clippers, led by a great performance by James Harden who scored 24 points.

Though the win clinched the Southwest Division title, the Rockets are zeroed in on gaining the top seed in the Western Conference.

Meanwhile, the Pelicans lost to Spurs and fell to the sixth spot in the Western Conference playoff race. Despite the loss, I believe New Orleans has a fair shot at beating the Rockets.

In order for this to happen, however, there are a couple of things to consider: Anthony Davis has to avoid fouling out as he did against San Antonio, and Nikola Mirotic should probably come off the bench instead of starting because he tends to struggle when he does.

Even then, I doubt the Pelicans will slow down the Rockets’ high-powered shooting offense and the Harden-Paul combo.

Prediction: Though I’d like to believe New Orleans will win, there’s just too much going for the Rockets to make that pick. I’m going with Houston.

Detroit Pistons vs Portland Trail Blazers

When:  March 17, 2018, 10:00 PM ET
Where: Moda Center
Spread: Trail Blazers -8.5
Over/Under: 208.5

Analysis: This game will be the third of a six-game West Coast trip for the Pistons; Detroit opened the series with a 110-79 loss at the Utah Jazz on Tuesday and then fell 120-113 to the Denver Nuggets Thursday night.

Andre Drummond finished with 21 points and 17 rebounds and Blake Griffin added 26 points and nine assists in the loss to the Nuggets. The Pistons have lost 12 of their last 15 games and have spiraled down to ninth place in the Eastern Conference, 5 1/2 games behind eighth place Miami.

Even though Detroit beat the Blazers on Feb 5, they have not won on the road since Jan. 10 at Brooklyn, suffering 11 consecutive road defeats and are 9-24 on the road this season.

Currently, the Blazers have the NBA's longest-active winning streak (11 games) and are in third place in the Western Conference standings. They’re latest win was against LeBron James’ Cavaliers on Thursday night at the Moda Center, their 17th win of the last 18 home games.

CJ McCollum scored 29 points on 12 of 24 shooting in the win over the Cavaliers. Meanwhile, Al-Farouq Aminu, who had been struggling only shooting 28.1 percent from the field heading into this game, broke out of his slump against the Cavaliers. Aminu 4 of 8 shots, including 3 of 6 threes, and finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and three assists.

Prediction: Though the Pistons have won the last five games in the series, Portland will win this time around.
