National League Betting: Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers

The Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers are set to begin a three-game National League series Monday night at Dodger Stadium.

Philadelphia had its nine-game winning streak snapped with a 3-1 loss to San Francisco in Sunday afternoon’s series finale at AT&T Park.  The Phillies are now 6-1 following the first two legs of their current 10-game road trip.  Despite its latest loss, the club carries a a solid 18-8 record against NL West opponents and will look to improve that mark against the struggling Dodgers.  Philadelphia has made the most of its opportunities when playing teams with losing records, posting a 38-18 mark this season.  The Phillies have won a season-best seven consecutive road series.

Phillies starting pitcher Roy Halladay is 14-4 with a 2.55 ERA in 23 starts this season and will enter on a three-game winning streak.  The right-hander has allowed eight runs (six earned) and 17 hits over that span, while Philadelphia’s offense has supplied 23 runs of support.  Halladay has posted a 6-3 record and 2.93 ERA in 10 road games, as opponents are hitting just .249 against him.  In four career starts versus the Dodgers, he has tallied a 3-1 mark and 2.03 ERA, including a 2-1 record and 2.35 ERA in three outings at Dodger Stadium.

Los Angeles was unable to hold a sixth inning lead Sunday and ultimately dropped a 4-3 series finale in Arizona.  The Dodgers also played the final game of a stretch of 12 straight contests against divisional opponents, finishing with a 7-5 record.  Most of the success can be attributed to a pitching staff that has posted a 2.86 ERA over the last 25 games.  Los Angeles hasn’t had much success against quality teams during the 2011 campaign, posting a 18-23 mark against winning teams, including a 7-11 mark in the second half of the season.

Dodgers starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda is 7-13 with a 2.96 ERA in 22 starts this season and snapped a four-game skid with a 1-0 road win over the Padres last time out.  He tossed seven shutout innings and gave up four hits while striking out eight in that particular contest.  The right-hander has enjoyed little success at home this season despite having a respectable 3.48 ERA, entering tonight with a losing 2-8 record at Dodger Stadium.  Kuroda has tallied a 2-1 mark and 0.84 ERA in five career outings versus the Phillies, holding them to an incredible .107 opposing batting average.

At the time of this writing, the Philadelphia Phillies are listed as a -165 road favorite and the total is 6.
