Bizarre circumstances have given the New York Mets some momentum. Now, they’ll try to build on it and conclude their homestand at .500 before entering a difficult nine-game stretch.

Coming off their first walkoff victory of 2011, the Mets will try to earn a split of a six-game homestand when they face the Oakland Athletics on Thursday.

The Mets (36-38) avoided a third straight loss with a 3-2 victory over Oakland on Wednesday, as Justin Turner was hit by a pitch from Brad Ziegler with the bases loaded in the 13th inning.

Capping this three-game series with a victory might be key for New York before it heads on the road for six games with stops in Texas and Detroit, two of the best home teams in baseball. The Mets then return to Citi Field for a three-game set with the New York Yankees, starting July 1.

Getting Jason Bay going again would certainly help the Mets as they try to return to .500.

The left fielder went 0 for 5 with three strikeouts Wednesday after being moved to cleanup following a 10-for-24 effort in six games. He had three hits, including a triple and a homer, and two RBIs in a 7-3 loss to the A’s in the series opener.

Bay, though, is hitting .176 with three RBIs in nine home games this month.

The Mets give the ball to Chris Capuano (5-7, 4.29 ERA) for his first meeting with Oakland.

The left-hander is 0-4 with a 9.47 ERA in his last six games - five starts - in interleague play, and that slide continued with Friday’s 4-3 defeat to the Los Angeles Angels. He gave up three runs - two earned - and eight hits with three walks in six innings.

Capuano hasn’t received much help in his last four home games, going 0-3 with a 3.70 ERA while the offense has backed him with six total runs.

The Mets may try, but will fail miserably as they face the A’s in the tiebreaker.
