Match Preview: South Korea vs Germany, Group F, June 27

Germany will take on the Korean Republic at 9am Eastern time on Wednesday June 27th in Kazan, Russia for their last game of the group stage of the World Cup 2018. This matchup was supposed to be a sendoff game for Germany before the knockout stages, but after a loss to Mexico and win against Sweden, this is now a must-win if the Germans hope to advance. Korea meanwhile has been eliminated after two games, as was expected, but they still do possess some attacking skill and should not be taken lightly. Regardless, our World Cup Betting odds show that it's very unlikely South Korea pulls off a victory.

Germany

Coming into this tournament as defending champions, Germany is in a position to tie Brazil for the most World Cups for a single nation with 5. However, the quest for a 5th World Cup Trophy took a major stumble when the Germans dropped their first game against Mexico, 1-0. Their second game against Sweden was not much better, as they let up a goal late in the first half and were forced to climb back in the second, scoring literally a last second desperation goal on a Toni Kroos free kick. Now at 1-0-1 after two games, they will hope that Sweden does not win against Mexico while at the same time rack up as many goals against South Korea as possible to guarantee passage on goal differential in case Sweden does win.

Korea

Korea was always the long shot to make it out of this group. From the moment this group was drafted, odds for South Korea had them losing all of their games, including this one. Leading up to the World Cup, they had been struggling and barely gained their berth. While they have lost both of their games so far in this tournament, both losses have only been by a goal, suggesting they are not as bad as advertised. Still, this is a country who has seen better days in their football history, having been AFC finalists on four occasions and finished in third place four other times in that tournament. Their all-time win/loss record in the World Cup is 5-9-17, putting them in 26th place among all countries, ahead of teams like Colombia, Croatia, Nigeria and Peru.

Match Overview

Even in a situation where all South Korea's players all play their best possible game, it is very hard to imagine them overcoming the defending champs. Germany has too much firepower to succumb to a team that is lucky to have even gotten to a World Cup. Korea's Son Heung-Min is the only player that can be considered a star, while Germany has stars in every position. The only lingering question is if this year's German squad has the desire to win, as they have looked flat-footed at times in their first two games, but even so, South Korea should not pose much of a threat.
