Match Preview: Panama vs Tunisia, Group G, June 28

The bottom half of Group G will battle it out on the last day of group games, as Panama and Tunisia go at it on Thursday June 28th at 2pm Eastern time in Saransk, Russia. Neither of these teams are making it out of the group stage as both of them have lost their first two matches, so this ends up being a consolation game. Our World Cup Betting odds have Tunisia as the favorite in this match, but with pride on the line after a 6-1 thumping by England in their last game, don't expect Panama to lay down for this one. This will be the first time these two countries have ever played each other, so either way there will be bragging rights on the line.

Tunisia

Tunisia had a brush with victory in their first game of the World Cup against England, holding the Three Lions to a tie up until the final minutes when Harry Kane wrote his name into the history books with a spectacular header to give his team the win. Tunisia was never able to recover from that letdown and got steamrolled 5-2 by Belgium in their second game. So far, they have been outshot 41-20 and outscored 7-3 at the World Cup so far. The good news for Tunisia is that this game will be their best chance in history to get a win at the World Cup. Participants in the 1998, 2002 and 2006 tournaments, they have been winless at all three and thus have never advanced.

Panama

Panama has had a rough go so far in their first World Cup. Outscored 9-1 over the course of two games, they have had the misfortune of playing two of the more impressive teams in this tournament so far in Belgium and England. A trip out of the group stage was never in the cards for this tiny Central American nation, but they do have something they never did before, and that is a goal in a World Cup game. Felipe Baloy quietly made Panama soccer history with his goal in the 78th minute that put Panama on the board against England. Now Panama is left with a small hope of making it out of Russia with at least a win in this matchup versus Tunisia, which they can do on Thursday.

Match Overview

Sadly, for both teams, this is their best chance to win a World Cup game. Despite having a tight-knit mix of veteran players, nobody on Panama's side have experience on a stage like the World Cup, whereas Tunisia, who don't really have any standout names, are still a more tested squad on the world stage. Their midfield is where they shine, with Ferjani Sassi, Mohamed Amine Ben Amor and Ghaylen Chaaleli making up an imposing presence. Panama, meanwhile will depend on team spirit and unity and hope that goalkeeper Jaime Penedo can hold down the fort, offering them hope that a goal or two could get them a win in their first World Cup. Penedo backstopped Panama to two Gold Cup second-place finishes in 2005 and 2013.
