England vs Colombia Betting Odds and Match Preview

On Tuesday, July 3rd at 2pm Eastern, the World Cup Round of 16 caps off with an exciting match between England and Colombia in Spartak Stadium in Moscow. Colombia has rebounded convincingly from a traumatic 2-1 loss in their first game against Japan to a resounding 3-0 win against Poland and a 1-0 win against Senegal. England meanwhile are starting a new chapter in what has been a disappointing soccer story over the last decade, and according to our World Cup Betting odds, they have the advantage in this match. So far in this World Cup, captain Harry Kane has lead his team to two straight victories before losing their final group game to Belgium. These two countries have played each other a total of 5 times in their history, and Colombia has never won a match while England has won three and drawn twice. The last meet up was in 2005, when England won 3-2.

Colombia

An emerging force in the world of international soccer, Colombia has reached the knockout stage for the second World Cup tournament in a row, but only the third time in their history. They did it this year thanks to a lethal goal scoring force lead by James Rodriguez, Juan Cuadrado and Radamel Falcao. Together with a capable supporting group, Colombia has scored goals in each of the World Cup games so far, making them one of the few teams to have not gone scoreless through the group stage. What is concerning, however, is that Rodriguez left the last match with an injury, and no one has yet to confirm if he will be available for this game versus England. If he is unable to play, Colombia still has a dynamic team of offensive talent to make up for the loss, but they are certainly not the same as they are with James in the lineup.

England

Behind the efforts of captain Harry Kane, England is back in the conversation for the World Cup. The top scorer in the group stage, Kane has galvanized his team towards a kind of success they had not seen since the David Beckham days. England defeated Tunisia by a hair before storming 6-1 past Panama in the group stage, automatically qualifying themselves for the knockout round. With qualification guaranteed, England chose to sit a number of important players (including Kane) in their final game against Belgium, which they lost 1-0.

Match Overview

The concerning statistic here is that so far England have only won matches against much weaker teams, in Tunisia and Panama. On the other hand, Colombia -their loss to Japan aside- has already won two important matches against difficult competition in Senegal and Poland. That would seem to indicate that Colombia is the more battle-tested side for this game. However, with the possibility of James not being available, England's odds to win skyrocket. Whoever wins this game will then have an easy path to the semifinals, as the winner here goes on to play the winner of the Sweden-Switzerland game in the quarters. Both England and Colombia are favored against either of those teams.
