Preakness Stakes Betting Predictions

The 2015 Preakness Stakes, which is the second leg of the Triple Crown is only a few days away, and horse racing fans are heading to Baltimore, Maryland to watch the second most popular horse race in the world. As expected, there will be a lot of bets placed on this race, so we are going to give you some pointers on Preakness Stakes betting.

Like the Kentucky Derby, which was run a couple of weeks ago, the favorites traditionally don’t do well at the Preakness Stakes, and 12 of the last 28 favorites have lost the race. Last year, the Kentucky Derby winner, California Chrome, was able to win it as a favorite, and this year’s Derby winner American Pharoah, will be trying to make it two consecutive years that the favorite won.

The good news for those that plan to do some Preakness Stakes betting, is the fact that some of American Pharoah’s biggest competitors, like Carpe Diem and Materiality, are not going to be in the race, because the trainer wants to rest them for the Belmont Stakes, which gives him a better chance to win. But he will still face some stiff competition from Firing Line and Dortmund, who finished second and third at the Derby.

Going by the Preakness Stakes Odds, the three horses with the best chances of winning are American Pharoah, who is at 2-3, Firing Line at 17-4, and Dortmund at 9-2. This isn’t very surprising, because they were the top three finishers at the Derby.

If you are going to bet on the Preakness Stakes, and are looking for a horse to pick other than American Pharoah, Dortmund is a solid bet, despite his third place finish at the Derby. The horse had won six straight races before the Derby, and was a legitimate contender at Churchill Downs, but seemed to tire down the stretch. This shouldn’t be a problem this time around, because Pimlico is a shorter race track, which should allow him to finish strong.

Firing Line hasn’t been the most consistent horse over his career, and has two wins and four second place finishes in six races. But he is also a great horse to place a bet on, because he is jockeyed by Gary Stevens, a man that has had a lot of success at the Preakness Stakes over the years, and last won it in 2013. With the success he had at the Kentucky Derby, he is more than capable of winning this race.

Despite the lack of success that some favorites have had at the Preakness, you still can’t ignore a horse like American Pharoah, who came from behind and managed to win the Kentucky Derby pretty easily. This time around, he cannot afford to run from behind due to the short length of the track, and if he leads out of the gate, he will be very hard to catch, because he is a very fast and powerful horse.

Now that you know a little about the horses that have the best chance of winning, it is time to make your Preakness Stakes picks. Personally, I believe American Pharoah is the best horse in the field, and will win the 2015 Preakness Stakes.
