Breeders' Cup Perspectives

The Breeders’ Cup is the biggest money event in horse racing, because the purse for all 13 races that will take place at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California on October 31st and November 1st exceeds $24 million.

One of the things that makes the Breeders’ Cup so special is the fact that it is where end of year awards are given out to the outstanding horses and their trainers, which makes winning even sweeter.

Some of the favorites going into the Breeders’ Cup have had to withdraw due to injuries, which mean other horses will take advantage of their absences, and make a name for themselves at Santa Anita Park.

The full schedule of races taking place at the Breeders’ Cup is listed below.

Friday, October 31

  • $1 million Juvenile Turf, 5:25 PM. ET.
  • $1 million Dirt Mile, 6:05 PM. ET.
  • $1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf, 6:50 PM. ET.
  • $2 million Longines Distaff. 7:35 PM. ET.

Saturday, November 1

  • $2 million 14 Hands Winery Juvenile Fillies Turf, 3:04 PM. ET.
  • $2 million Fillies and Mare Turf, 3:43 PM. ET.
  • $1 million DraftKings Filly and Mare Sprint, 4:21 PM. ET.
  • $1 million Turf Sprint, 5:05 PM. ET.
  • $2 million Sentient Jet Juvenile, 5:44 PM. ET.
  • $3 million Longines Turf, 6:23 PM. ET.
  • $1.5 million XPRESSBET Sprint, 7:02 PM. ET.
  • $2 million Mile, 7:40 PM. ET.
  • $5 million Classic, 8:35 PM. ET.

In the $2 million Sentient Jet Juvenile, the overwhelming favorite American Pharaoh has to withdraw due to injury, which paves the way for another 2 year old colt or gelding to take his place. Since he was scratched, the odds have shifted in favor of Carpe Diem, at 3-1 odds. Carpe Diem has only been in two races this year, but he won both convincingly, which is why he is the new favorite to win this race, but he will face some stiff competition from Daredevil, who is at 5-2 odds, and has also won his two starts this year.

Although Osaila and Qualify are the big favorites to win the Juvenile Fillies Turf race on Friday, at 5-1 odds, keep an eye out for Sivoliere at 12-1 odds. She has won three of her five starts, and will be ridden by Hall of Fame Jockey Garry Stevens, who won the Preakness and $5 million Classic last year, and is returning from a knee injury.

The $5 million Classic is the main event of the Breeder’s Cup, with the biggest price of any racing tournament in the world. While most experts believe the race is going to be won my Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner California Chrome, others believe that Chrome hasn’t been in good form lately, and is likely to be surpassed by Shared Belief, an unbeaten 2 year old that has won his last seven races, including one at Santa Anita Park this year.

Another contender expected to make a run for the Classic title is Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist, but he also hasn’t been in very good form since, winning one out of the three races he has been in since winning the Belmont.
