Kansas City Chiefs Betting

Last season, the Chiefs finished with a 12-4 record that won them the AFC West. However, they lost to the Steelers in the Divisional round of the playoffs who then went on to play the Patriots in the AFC Championship game.

During the offseason, the Chiefs made some moves that were somewhat surprising given they might impact their success in this year’s campaign.

First, they got rid of veteran receiver Jeremy Maclin, who was their top receiver last season despite Tyreek Hill’s rising star status. The Chiefs have high hopes on Hill, and releasing Maclin probably saved some money, but there’s a lot riding on Hill’s shoulders.

Kansas City also released running back Jamaal Charles. Nevertheless, this move makes more sense because of Charles’ problems with injuries that continually kept him off the field.

And, given that Spencer Ware filled in Charles’ shoes very well made him an expendable asset. That said, e moves like this  seem intelligent on the surface, but they’re reliant on players staying healthy.

Case in point, Ware went into the offseason as Kansas City’s top running back, but suffered an injury in the preseason that will keep him sidelined for the entire year. Now, the Chiefs will have to rely on rookie Kareem Hunt to carry the team’s running attack.

As if the absence of the Chiefs’ main running back wasn’t enough, seeing how they played in their Week 3 game against the Seahawks is probably more concerning in my opinion.

The Chiefs must hit the ground running if they’re to have an inkling of a shot of beating the Patriots. But, from what I could see against Seattle, they don’t look like they’re ready.

There are also some other concerns I have, such as the absence of cornerback Steven Nelson. If the Chiefs go with Phillip Gaines, Tom Brady will have a feasting.

I’m not saying Kansas City doesn’t have what it takes to hold their own against New England, but they need to be practically flawless if they’re to escape Gillette Stadium unscathed.

Also, they’re going to have to figure out a way of harassing   Brady right from the get-go. Kansas City’s front seven must keep the pressure of New England’s quarterback all night long.

Now, while I’m relatively confident in the offense’s ability to make this game interestiPlay`ng, I’m not as certain on the defense being able to contain Brady and the Patriots offense.

Players like Ramik Wilson, Kevin Pierre-Louis and Ukeme Eligwe show a lot of promise, but it still remains to be seen if they can hold back running backs like Dion Lewis and James White.

Chiefs Betting Trends

Kansas City is 5-2 ATS in its last 7 games

  • Kansas City is 10-3 SU in its last 13 games
  • The total has gone UNDER in 9 of Kansas City's last 13 games
  • Kansas City is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 games on the road

New England Patriots Betting

Once more, the Patriots are the favorites to win the Super Bowl this year. However, this year’s campaign got tougher when Julian Edelman suffered a season-ending injury in the preseason.

Without Edelman, Tom Brady will likely have to rely more on Rob Gronkowski and Brandin Cooks for his passing attack.

The Patriots offense is still deadly-effective with Brady at the helm, but Edelman’s injury is a costly one.

Even though New England heads into this game as the favorites, Bill Belichick is still cautious and has a healthy respect for his opposing coach. “Andy’s a great coach.” Said Belichick, “(He’s) been with one and now two organizations. I respect the way he coaches his team. I respect the way they play. They’re always tough. We’ve always had great battles with them. I don’t think anybody – I can’t think of too many teams that have handled us better than the way they handled us in 2014.”

The Pats were busy during the offseason; they brought in a slew of players like Stephon Gilmore to help bulk up their defense, and added running backs Rex Burkhead and Mike Gillislee to fill in for the departed LeGarrette Blount.

Blount’s departure was somewhat surprising considering he led the league in rushing touchdowns last year. His tendency to let the ball slip might have been a factor for not being rehired, but not having a tested running game is a bit concerning.

Brady will be forced to pass the ball more than he usually does, which might make the offense more predictable and easier to defend against.

Brady is also cognizant of what the Chiefs’ defenders are capable of: Derrick Johnson is one of the best linebackers in the league.” Brady mentioned, “He does so many things for that defense. You can tell it really hurts them when he’s not out there. And Eric Berry is a big time playmaker. Marcus Peters – more interceptions than anybody since he came in the league. [Justin] Houston and [Dee] Ford, I mean, they strip sack the quarterback.”

Regardless, the Patriots should come out of this game with their first regular season victory.

Patriots Betting Trends

New England is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 games

  • New England is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games

ATS Pick

The Patriots are the 9-point favorites. Last season, New England went 16-3 ATS, the best record in the league, while the Chiefs went 9-7-1 ATS. The Chiefs are 0-6 in New England, and 2-4 ATS in those games. Take the Patriots at -9.

The Chiefs are 0-6 in New England; the Patriots are the straight up pick on this one.

Over/Under Pick

The over/under in this game is 48.5. I expect one team to put up a lot of points while the other will not, I’m taking the under on this one.
