Bet on the Broncos

Just in case you’ve discounted the Broncos’ chances of winning the Super Bowl because of how the Panthers have played this year, you might want to know what Denver has gone through to reach this game. It might give you a better perspective of which team has more grit and determination.

It might surprise you to know that Denver’s been the first team in the Super Bowl era which has overcome a 14-point deficit to win the game, against three teams that have made it to the playoffs. It also might not know that 11 of their victories -over the combined regular and postseason- was by a margin of seven or less points, the most by any team.

And, if you agree that it’s defense that wins championships then you also might agree that it’s Denver’s defense that has brought them to this game. During the season, it allowed a league low 6.2 yards per pass attempt and 3.3 yards per rush, an NFL best 283.1 yards given up per game. Even legendary quarterback Peyton Manning was privy to recognize this fact. “Like I’ve said from the get-go,” Manning stated, “our defense has gotten us to this point, let’s make that very clear.” Whether the Broncos win this game or not, will largely depend on what the defense does to slow down Cam Newton.

Perhaps they’re the only defense that can do so. Denver’s defense has stopped Matthew Stafford, Teddy Bridgewater, Aaron Rodgers, Joe Flacco, Jay Cutler, Philip Rivers and Tom Brady, who they stopped twice, including in the AFC Championship game. They have one of the best defenses against the run and with Chris Harris Jr, Aqib Talib and Bradley Roby they are also deadly guarding against the pass.

Considering who they’re up against, they have a monumental job in their hands. If they but give Cam Newton an inch, he’ll make them pay for it.

Bet on the Panthers

Who would have thought, that after losing their star wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin to an injury before the season started the Panthers would have taken off on their meteoric season as they have. It’s also understandable, given the attention the offense get, that a lot of people have forgotten that Carolina’s defense has been ranked among the top 10 for three years in a row.

Yet, here they are. At the culmination of their greatest season by far, all they need to do is beat the Broncos. And, considering how good the offense is, led by Cam Newton, and there’s more than a good chance for them to crown themselves as the champions this year. The Panthers led the league in scoring with 31.2 points per game and had 18 scoring drives with fewer than 5 plays, the most in the NFL. Newton, himself, ran for 10 touchdowns during the regular season and for two more in the NFC Championship Game. He also helped put up 31 points on Seattle's second-ranked defense just in the first half of the divisional playoff game and led Carolina to Arizona’s 49-15 defeat in the NFC title game, even if the Cardinals had the league's No. 5 defense.

If the Panthers offensive line can hold against the Broncos’ stern defense, allowing Newton to do his thing and the defense can rattle Peyton into committing more than one turnover then the Panthers will cap this season off with a win.

Whatever the score is at the end, it’ll be one heck of a game.

Super Bowl 50 Bet: It’s going to be a battle between defenses, though no one might expect it. Whichever defense plays better, will control the flow of the game.  Denver has the better squad on defense, though it won’t be enough to stop the Cam Newton powered Panthers offense. Carolina will win but will not cover, take Denver at +5.5.
