NCAA Basketball East Region

#1 Villanova vs #5 West Virginia

  • When: March 23, 2018, 7:27 PM ET
  • Where: TD Garden
  • Spread: Villanova -5.5
  • Over/Under: 152.5

Betting on Villanova

As the only remaining No. 1 seed of the tournament after the first weekend, it won’t get any easier for Villanova but they’ll try to honor being one of the best teams in the country this season.

The Wildcats owned the top offensive team in the nation and had no problems going through the first and second rounds, clobbering opponents with an average win margin of 23.5 points.

They’ve also improved on defense, shedding 10 points from their points allowed average to 60 points so far.

However, they’ll need to step up against the Mountaineers and that means an even better performance from Mikal Bridges, who scored 23 against Alabama, and Big East Player of the Year Jalen Brunson, who only scored 12 pts on the Tide.

Betting on West Virginia

The Mountaineers have fared well so far, in fact, being one of the most impressive teams in the NCAA tournament.

If they manage to get to the Elite Eight, it’ll be their first trip since 2015 but they’ll have a tough opponent ahead of them in Villanova.

Over their two tournament games, the Mountaineers played well on both ends of the court which is exactly how they’ll need to play to beat the Wildcats.

West Virginia averages 80.2 points per game and should be able to keep up with Villanova.

When WV is firing on all cylinders offensively, it gives the defense opportunity to do what this team does best.

Defense is the name of the game for the Mountaineers, there are few teams that are as physical on the court as this team.

West Virginia’s intense defense resulted in wins by a combined 40 points over their two first game while allowing just 69 points per game.

However, Villanova isn’t a pushover so it’ll be a tough opponent for WV. If they can keep the pressure on the Wildcats throughout the entire game, they might get away with the win.

Pick: This game will come down to the wire, but West Virginia will win it.

#3 Texas Tech Red Raiders vs #2 Purdue Boilermakers

  • When: March 22, 2018, 7:37 PM ET
  • Where: Staples Center
  • Spread: Michigan -2.5
  • Over/Under: 136

Betting on Texas Tech

The Red Raiders fought through a tough game against Florida and snatched a 69-66 win from the Gators.

Team star Keenan Evans put up 22 points along with a tie-breaking 3-pointer with little more than two minutes left on the clock. Freshman Zhaire Smith also provided help with 18 points, nine boards, and seven dishes.

Their attention now, however, needs to turn to the No. 2 seeded Purdue if they want to make it to the Elite Eight.

The Boilermakers have one of the best offenses in the country, but they suffered a big blow due to Isaac Haas’ injury that will keep him away from playing this game.

This might just give the Red Raiders an opening to win the game; Texas Tech allowed less than 70 points in each of the first two games.

Betting on Purdue

The Boilermakers were among the favorites to win it all; but, because of Haas’ injury things have changed and are now more difficult.

It’s hard to replace a 7-foot-2 big man that’s averaging 14.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game this season. However, the Purdue happens to have another big man in 7-foot-3 freshman Matt Haarms who may pick up some of the slack.

Purdue got away from a scare against Butler in their last game, when they lost a 10-point lead late in the second half of that game.

The Boilermakers will be looking to change the story with Texas Tech and likely focus on their excellent shooting to score big on the Red Raiders.

This team has been excellent from three-point range all season, ranking second in the country with a 42.1 percent mark. The Boilermakers have been even better in the tournament, hitting 43.5 percent from beyond the arc led by Dakota Mathias (5-for-11) and Thompson (5-for-12)

Pick: The Red Raiders will scramble, but it’ll be the Boilermakers that capitalize on its shooting. Purdue wins.
