Houston Astros Starting Pitcher Analysis

Justin Verlander (19-8 ERA: 3.19) will start in Game 6 for the Astros. After coming close as a Detroit Tiger, Verlander will attempt to close out the series and win for the first time in his career.

Verlander has been phenomenal in the postseason for the Astros, posting four wins in five postseason starts. His only loss was in Game 2 when he allowed three runs in six innings.

The Astros nevertheless came out with a win in that games, and they’ll look to Verlander to close out strong to avoid a deciding seventh game.

Verlander is arguably the best pitcher this year in the postseason, owning a 4-0 record, a 2.05 earned-run average, a 0.88 WHIP and 29 strikeouts in 30.2 innings.

Why You Should Bet On The Astros

Houston is fresh off a win that can only be described as the best in recent history, clawing their way to a 13-12 victory in 10 innings.

The game, started by Clayton Kershaw and Dallas Keuchel, should have been a low scoring affair; but, as it turned out, both bats jumped to life and neither ace went past the fifth inning.

The Astros’ bats earned their salt as Yuli Gurriel, Jose Altuve, George Springer, Carlos Correa and Brian McCann all hit home runs while Alex Bregman won the game with a two-out single in the bottom of the 10th.

While Altuve and Correa have received most of the accolades during Houston’s run, it’s been George Springer who continues to be this team’s MVP in this World Series, coming up with another big game by ways of his third homerun of the series, and bringing his RBI total to 4.

Springer holds the Astros’ hopes in his words despite heading into enemy territory. In comments to Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com, Springer says, “It's not an easy place to play," about the Dodgers' home venue, "but we're giving the ball to Justin Verlander, and that's going to be awesome for us.”

If Verlander can keep the Dodgers to one or two runs, the team will look to their big bats to come through for them.

Los Angeles Dodgers Starting Pitcher Analysis

Rich Hill (12-8) ERA: 3.27) gets the nod to start for the Dodgers in this game and will need to be practically perfect if he’s to help his team earn another game.

Unlike Verlander, who has started on five matches, the Dodgers have only called on Hill in three games this postseason, having great performances but not receiving a decision.

Hill has allowed 4 runs in his three starts, but has not seen past the fifth inning, which might prove to be the difference in this one, after Los Angeles went through their bullpen on Sunday night.

Despite his limited appearances, Hill owns a 2.77 ERA in three games, and has walked seven batters.

Los Angeles Dodgers Analysis

For the Dodgers, there is nothing but this game. This means manager Dave Roberts will have to pull out all the stops if the Dodgers are to make it to a deciding Game 7.

With Verlander on the mound, Los Angeles will have to figure out a way of knocking him out early in order to force the Astros to pull from their bullpen and have a good shot at winning.

But, Verlander has a knack for pitching well in big games and it’ll be easier said than done. Nevertheless, the Dodgers believe they can do it, as is evidenced by comments by Yasiel Puig, “This is not going to be finished Tuesday. There’s going to be a Game 7…Everybody is going to be ready for Verlander [on] Tuesday night. The best pitcher they have.”

The Dodgers already know they can get to Verlander, as they did in Game 2 when Joc Pederson and Corey Seager knocked a couple out of the park to put the Dodgers up 3-1.

But, things turned sour when Kenley Jansen blew the lead and was --unable to save the game which ended in a 7-6 Astros win.

This game will likely come down to pitching decisions. One bad decision from Roberts could cost them the game.
