Washington Nationals Trying To Secure Their Division Lead In Three-Game Series Against The Mets

Though the Washington Nationals were successful in their recent West coast road trip, finishing 7-2, they stumbled upon coming back home and went on to lose five of their last seven games.

The Mets, meanwhile have won four of their last five games and will attempt to cut short Washington’s nine game lead in the NL East.

Nationals Analysis

The Nationals have been stellar for the greater part of this season, jumping ahead for the lead in the NL East.

Much of this team’s success has to do with its starting rotation and sluggers like Bryce Harper.

Nevertheless, they’re having big problem this season with their bullpen, which has horribly blown its fair share of leads and cost the team some games.

Fresh off losing two of three games against the Atlanta Braves, the Nationals now face an uphill struggle against a Mets team that’s on the up and up.

Scoring runs shouldn’t be a problem for the Nationals as they’re currently the best hitting team in the NL and tied for the second most runs. However, if they fail to get some quality innings from their bullpen, it’s going to be hard for them to defeat the Mets.

Starting Pitcher Analysis

Gio Gonzalez gets the nod in the first game of the series. He’s 5-1 with a 2.91 ERA in 13 starts this season, and has been one of the most consistent starters on the team. Gonzalez has allowed six earned runs in his last three starts and hasn’t lost a decision since May 8.

Nationals Trends

  • Washington is 1-5 ATS in its last 6 games
  • Washington is 1-5 SU in its last 6 games
  • The total has gone UNDER in 7 of Washington's last 10 games

Mets Analysis

Though the Mets were a big disappointments at the start of the season, it seems they’ve picked themselves up as of late.

The Mets have an fair shot at cutting the Nationals’ lead in the division standings. With how Washington has been playing right now, it shouldn’t  be too difficult to take advantage and win the series.

Like the Nationals however, the Mets are also having issues with their bullpen, and the team also has lost games they are expected to win.

With their division rivals in town however, expect the Mets to be itching to stick it to the Nationals.

Starting Pitcher Analysis

The Mets are sending Steven Matz to start against Washington. In his only start of the season, Matz pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and one run.

The Mets hope to get a similar performance from him against Washington when he takes the mound on Thursday.

Mats went 1-1 against the Nationals last year with a 1.80 ERA. If the Mets can give him some run support, he should be able to help them get the win.

Mets Trends

  • NY Mets is 5-1 ATS in its last 6 games
  • NY Mets is 5-1 SU in its last 6 games
  • The total has gone UNDER in 6 of NY Mets's last 8 games

Picks and Prediction:

The Mets are performing much better than the Nationals right now, and are playing at Citi Field. Scoring against Gonzalez will be hard, but I expect the Mets to win in this NL East matchup.
