Mets Analysis

The visiting Mets are in a slump having lost four of their last six games, three of which came at the hands of the NL East leading Washington Nationals. The losses also cost them the opportunity of closing the gap on their division rivals.

The Mets are trying to get back to winning games, but have a tough road ahead of them against the Dodgers, who have not only been playing well lately but also won the first game last night.

New York is up against the Dodger’s top-gun pitching staff in this series and need radically improve their batting average of .249, which is 20th in the league, to have an inkling of a chance of winning this game.

Last night, Jose Reyes and Gavin Cecchini hit homers against Kershaw, the former hit two while the latter’s hit his first home run in the majors but it still wasn’t enough to pull through.

Starting Pitcher Analysis

Robert Gsellman gets the nod to start on Tuesday. Gsellman is 5-4 with a 5.50 ERA for the season. Prior to his last start, Gsellman had won three consecutive starts, allowing three total earned runs.

However, in his last start Gsellman gave up 11 hits and seven runs to the Nationals in five innings, in what ended up being his worst start of the year. He will be looking bounce back against the Dodgers, but will also need some major run support from the Mets’ offense.

Mets Trends

  • NY Mets is 9-3 ATS in its last 12 games on the road
  • NY Mets is 4-2 SU in its last 6 games on the road
  • The total has gone UNDER in 5 of NY Mets' last 6 games on the road

Dodgers Analysis

At the start of the season, the Dodgers were the big hopefuls to bag to the NL West title with the San Francisco Giants expected to fal back.
However, things have gone South because of what the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks are achieving this year.

With the Rockies and Diamondbacks surpassing expectations, the Los Angeles find itself third in the division standings, one game behind the Rockies, who lead the division.

Despite winning nine of their last 10 games, the Dodgers must win against teams they are expected to beat if they want to avoid the Rockies taking the lead.

The Dodgers, whose pitching rotation has the best ERA in the league, but whose inconsistency at bat has hurt them in close games, ends up wasting quality starts by pitchers like Clayton Kershaw.

Even though the team is the sixth best run scoring team, they have a .251 batting average as a team, which is good for 19th in the league.

Dodgers rookie Cody Bellinger became the fastest player to reach 21 home run mark and gave the Dodgers the edge to defeat the Mets in the first game.

Pitching Analysis

Los Angeles gives Brandon McCarthy the start against the Mets. In 11 starts this season, McCarthy has a 5-3 record and a 3.14 ERA.

After a 5-1 start to the season, McCarthy has lost two of his last three starts, but only allowed five combined runs in those starts.

As previously mentioned, the inconsistent hitting cost the pitcher two wins after solid performances.

Dodgers Trends

  • LA Dodgers is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 games when playing NY Mets
  • LA Dodgers is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games when playing NY Mets
  • The total has gone OVER in 4 of LA Dodgers's last 6 games when playing NY Mets

Game Pick:

The Mets have disappointed this season because obviously the team has more talented than what they’re showing at the moment.

But, the Dodgers are playing really well right now and are in the hunt to take back the division lead so I expect McCarthy to dominate the Mets’ bats and get enough from their sluggers to get the Dodgers the win.
